Bulls discuss renewing series with A&T

Johnson C. Smith and N.C. A&T are in negotiations to renew their football rivalry after a 27-year hiatus.
Sources close to the talks said the schools are discussing a contract to play Aug. 28 in Greensboro as the season-opener for both teams, with a second game in Greensboro 2009. Smith is pushing for a Charlotte game in 2010.
“They have our contract,” JCSU coach Daryl McNeill said when contacted by phone Monday. “We’re waiting on theirs.”
There would be benefits for both sides. A&T traditionally has recruited Charlotte heavily, and JCSU is trying to boost its profile in the area as well. The schools competed in the CIAA until A&T jumped to the MEAC in 1970, but maintained the rivalry until 1981.
The Aggies lead the series 29-9-2.
“It’s a win-win situation,” said the source, which asked for anonymity because the contracts have yet to be signed. “The schools have a long-standing rivalry with each other and recruit a lot of the same student-athletes in Charlotte.”
A&T, which plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) MEAC, has lost 27 straight games dating back to 2005. Division II JCSU is coming off a 3-7 season in 2007. The Golden Bulls’ 10-game schedule could also include Lincoln (Pa.), which joins the CIAA in 2009 after moving up from Division III.
“We’re just waiting on our conference to give us the go-ahead,” McNeill said.
