Hilson, St. Mary’s Ryken boys basketball hurt Gonzaga Eagles Senior scores 32 points to leads Knights to first win over D.C. team since 2007 by James A. McCray III Staff writer Washington, DC - Despite a bad wheel in the form of a knee injury suffered in a prior game, St. Mary’s Ryken Knights senior point guard Jarin Hilson drove through the Gonzaga Eagles defense Tuesday night to the tune of 32 points on the road in Washington, D.C., in a 73-67 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference victory. The win against Gonzaga was Ryken’s first win against the Eagles since Feb. 20, 2007. The Knights won that contest convincingly, 64-47. “Well, it starts with practice, and this week in practice we really focused on getting back to the old us and playing with a chip on our shoulders,” Hilson said of the mindset heading into the Gonzaga game. “Our goal was to dominate the rebounds and outhustle them, and it was a great team win. We had several players with double-digit rebounds, so that’s really how we did it.” Hilson’s injury happened Saturday in a 69-66 overtime loss to WCAC foe Bishop Ireton (Va.), but that did not stop the senior from scoring at will Tuesday For the rest of the story: www.somdnews.com/article/20140117/SPORTS/140119224/1084/hilson-st-mary-x2019-s-ryken-boys-basketball-hurt-gonzaga-eagles&template=southernMaryland[/b]

i’m doing a little research on this kid right now, but i can tell for sure that he plays in the “powerhouse” high school conference here in the dmv, the wcac. that’s the private catholic school conference that includes dematha, st. john’s, and o’connell high schools. these schools produce major d1 mcdonald’s all american type talent almost every year.
this kid hilson comes from the same school that rj buck came from, st. mary’s high school in maryland. st. mary’s is not known to be one of the stronger programs in the wcac, but compared to all public schools, they are a powerhouse. wcac teams are essentially aau teams because they recruit players from all over the country. so for hilson to make the wcac all conference team and the washington post all met 4th team says a lot. the quality of play in the wcac is virtually unmatched anywhere in the country. i mean, justin black didn’t even make wcac all conference when he played at dematha, nor all met, and he was 1st team all meac this year.
i like hilson’s video so far, the kid definitely has talent. has a very good handle, excellent passer, and can create his own shot. again coach cy recruits a pg who stands 6 foot or taller, no more “pee wee” pg’s for coach cy!
i’m still researching this guy, but my preliminary opinion is that this could be an “immediate impact” type recruit. with the studs that moton is bringing in down the road, coach cy knows he can’t half step with his recruiting and on film, this kid is by no means a half stepper...

okay, i've seen enough of his video. dude is a straight up stud!! i use to coach varsity girls basketball in the wcac, so i recognize the schools he is playing against in his videos and he ain't playing against no scrubs, he's playing against the best doggone talent in the dc metro area, that includes dc/md/va. trust me when i tell ya, making "1st team all wcac" and 4th team all met is a big friggin' deal! out of all the recruits we've signed out of the dc area (that i can remember), none of them made "1st team all wcac" and none of the made "washington post all met". even our guy bruce beckford didn't make "all met" in high school at montross christian. that should give you an idea of how good this guy is.
this appears to be a huge pickup! you put up 32 big ones against gonzaga high school, then you're flat out ballin'!! gonzaga is no friggin' joke, this dude can ball. imo, he would "easily" beat out briscoe for the starting pg position...

Hilson, Nunn use basketball to overcome tragedyDuo has strong bond after older brother's death, mother's illness Posted: Tuesday, January 21, 2014 10:55 pm by Greg Carey, Assistant Sports Editor FAIRMONT — During the winter of 2011, then-sophomore Jarin Hilson was gearing up for Fairmont Senior’s first scrimmage of the season. Hilson was in the process of becoming a standout point guard for the Polar Bears, but at that time, so much more weighed on his mind. Hilson estimates approximately two weeks had gone by since his mother, Amy Nunn, put his older brother, Quentin Bolden, on the news after Bolden was thought to be missing for a few days. “I was just thinking he’d be back, and a week goes by, and I see him come up on the news and it didn’t really hit me,” Hilson said. “Two weeks go by and we’re getting ready to go into the gym for our first scrimmage and I’m with my dad. Right before I went in the gym, it hit me. I broke down and started crying. At that moment, something told me he wasn’t coming back.” Unfortunately, Hilson was right. About a month and a half later, a DNA strand confirmed the family’s worst nightmare — Bolden, 23, had been shot to death in Morgantown, his body ultimately discovered in Cheat Lake. WCAC basketball: St. Mary’s Ryken climbs conference ladder with transfer Jarin HilsonBy Brandon Parker, Published: January 6When Jarin Hilson and his family were pondering a move from West Virginia to the D.C. metro area, a thought relayed by St. Mary’s Ryken Coach Dave Tallman resonated in the point guard’s head. “When Coach was recruiting me, he said I’d get to play in one of the best conferences in the nation with the WCAC,” Hilson said. “I want to play against the best because that makes me better, so it was a no-brainer.” But entering the season, the question remained whether the Knights could stand out against some of the best following last season’s 9-19 record that included a 1-17 mark in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and a 10-game losing streak to end the season. With Hilson serving as one of three talented transfers and the Knights returning all but one player from a year ago, both Tallman and his players weren’t surprised by the chemistry evident during summer league and preseason practices. “In the summer, we made a huge effort to have a relentless work ethic to fix mistakes of the past,” Tallman said. “We put a lot of effort into shooting the ball and that’s made us a better team, and there’s a lot of leadership among the four seniors we have.” After getting their first win by forfeit, the Knights registered two victories behind the play of Hilson, whose ability to score and distribute the ball from the point guard spot has helped create a balanced team attack.
"My role is to get the out in transition and make a play," said Hilson, who is averaging 14 points. "I like to pass and make my teammates better, so I'm confident with the ball in my hands that I'll make the best play for us to score."www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/wcac-basketball-st-marys-ryken-climbs-conference-ladder-with-transfer-jarin-hilson/2014/01/06/833baf12-76f6-11e3-af7f-13bf0e9965f6_story.html

i looked at hilson’s scoring for his senior season and it appears he steps his game up against the best teams in the wcac which is a very good indicator. they play all wcac teams twice and the top teams in the wcac this year are 1st place gonzaga (scored 32, 14), 2nd place dematha (scored 19, 17), 3rd place st. john’s (scored 16, 11), 4th place o’connell (scored 26, 9).
because of the quality of this league, i’m very impressed by his numbers. i really think we’ve got a “steal”. hope coach cy already has his letter of intent before some big time school snatches him away from us.
to give you an idea of who the stronger wcac teams were this season, below are the standings in the wcac this season along with hilson’s scoring stats for every game he played...

Sounds good and film looks good; I just hope when he gets here he can execute points close to as on film. Him and Pack could be a great combination. I'll wait and see though.
