I agree that Broadways assistants had a lot to do with Central’s success. I’ve heard from some that Asberry deserved much of the credit.
I think the biggest reason for Broadway’s success was Bill Hayes. That good Central squad was a result of a lot of 1A transfers brought in from a variety of places. The type of guys they recruited had to be influenced by Bill Hayes. The combination of Broadway with his UNC ties, and Hayes already formidable recruiting skills and contacts was the main reason for Broadway’s success. Broadway (and his staff) knew how to use that talent.
So other than no head coaching experience, Fobb’s situation entering A&T is hard to compare with Broadway’s:
- The AD probably wasn’t as football savvy as Hayes. I would be surprised if she assisted in recruiting. She wasn’t a coach so probably had NO contacts.
- As mentioned, he came in with little to no NC ties.
- When hired, made some questionable choices for assistants
- Had few returning starters and high turnover
- Trying to do two jobs – Coach & OC
What a setup for disaster! 0-22. But I’ll look forward to the 2008 season as optimistic as ever.
