Saabman, I need to make a correction ... my bad ... We beat Dudley in 1963 for the State 4-A Championship with Charlie Sanders on the team. We returned to the State 4-A Championship again in 1964 and lost to Darden High from Wilson, N C. My team had a player by the name of Henry Logan both of those years. Darden High had a player by the name of Bernard Barnes who came to A&T for one year and then left to join the Air Force. Henry Logan was the first Black to play at an all White College in the South East back in 1964. He is considered the "Jackie Robinson" of basketball. He played in the ABA with the Oakland Oaks and Rick Barry. They won a Championship his rookie year. He is in the N C Hall of Fame. Charlie Sanders is in the NFL Hall of Fame. He was a great tight end with Minnesota.

Saabman - I need to make a correction. My high school beat Dudley in 1963 for the State 4-A Championship. We returned again in 1964 for the State 4-A Championship and lost to Darden High from Wilson, N C. My high school was led by the legendary Henry Logan in 1963-64. Henry Logan was the first Black basketball player to go to an all white college in 1964 in the South. He is considered to be the "Jackie Robinson" of basketball. He played in the ABA with Rick Barry for the Oakland Oaks. They won the ABA Championship his rookie year. He is in the N C Hall of Fame. Charlie Sanders is in the NFL Hall of Fame. He was a great - great tight end with the Minnesota Vikings.
Bernard Barnes was a great player who played for Darden High out of Wilson. He also played quarterback for them. He came to A&T on a scholarship to play basketball as a guard in1965. He was a very good ball handler who was fancy and could shoot. He only played one year at A&T and then joined the Air Force.
Charlie Scott was the first Black to play basketball in the ACC in 1965. He was great also.

Robert Myers aka "NENE" was one of the best ballers to play at Dudley back in the late 50's and early 60's. He and a number of ex-Greensboro ballers played in Bob McAdoo's Pony Summer league at A&T back in the mid 70's. There were a few NBA and ABA players (World-Be-Free, M.L. Carr, Ed Manning, Walter Davis, McAdoo, just to name a few) that played in that league, also some ex-NBA players. At the time it was the top pro summer league in the country.

Charlie Sanders played basketball really good but he was not the best baller to come out of Greensboro. My high school beat Dudley for the 4-A Championship in 1964 with Sanders as a starter on that team. We also beat them in football with him on the team. Now research that. Like I said (" correct me if I'M wrong") on Skip. As far has Charlie Sanders . never said that he was a great Basket ball player. Next time read thread not into it. Sanders played for Detroit Lions and his Father Mr Sanders Sr was and educator at A&T for some years and a friend of my Fathers. But this is about HIGH SCHOOL Players in the GREENSBORO , Not pros. Pony Summer league at A&T back in the mid 70's you would have seen Ray Harrison play along with Layman & Clavin Williams. also MUD Tap from time to time...lol When his head wasn't in that Bag!!!

Wow,Wow,Wow!!!!!!!! Man I remember Henry "The Magician" Logan. He was Magic Johnson before Magic was Magic....... Illustrious scorer, magnificent ball handler, supreme passer from Asheville. He was creme de la creme.
But also check this out.....just like errrrrrrwhere there were a lot of ballers out of the 'boro who were "blood raw" but because of bad luck, politics, or attitude never got a chance to play out their high school careers.
I'm talking but playas that would play in Mac's summer league in Moore gym, at Hayes-Taylor YMCA (inside gym and outside on asphalt), Windsor Center, etc. and play JUST AS GOOD as the more familiar playas.

Mud Tap played at A&T back in the early 60's and graduated in 1964. He then went into the Army.

I too knew Skip Nod and he was about 5'10" tall. He never played for A&T. The "Good Life" got him. Does anyone know if he is still living.
The best basketball player from Greensboro -- Tie ... McAdoo & Lou Hudson with Danny Manning a close 3rd.

My cuz says 'Tap's" government name is: Mr. Melvin Johnson. Mud Tap from what one of his peers told me was a natural scoring machine who ran da court like Ray Allen. I got to see him when he was in his 30's and he could still shoot it then. Can you imagine what Dudley's backcourt was like with "Tap" and Freddie "Curly" Neal running da show? ?? "Skip" is deceased from what my cuz says. Cuz said "Skip Nod" did not have a smooth stroke but could jump outta da gym (Moore's or any other). Da lifestyle killed "Skip." They say they use to put a tape bag of sniff, sniff near the top of the square box over the basketball goal just to watch him go get it!!!!!

My dad would take us to see Dudley when I was younger but I never knew what happened to him after Dudley. Nod must have been like The Goat .
