My take on the game.
Offense
Offensive Line - They did a good job of pass blocking but VUL clogged the middle for most of the game which made running the ball more difficult than expected. Gave up 4 sacks but at least 2 of them were Kindles fault for holding the ball to long. Grade B+
Quarterback - Kindle gave a masteful performance throwing the long ball and was on the money all day. He has to learn not to hold the ball to long and fumbled once and made a bad pitch to T Coles. Still this was the best QB performance we've seen in a loooong time in Aggie Stadium. Grade A-
Running Backs - Overall I think this was our most disappointing group as they put the ball on the ground 4 times, two by Mayhew. They did do a nice job of pass blocking. Grade F
Wide Receivers Ran great routes and did a great job running after the catch. Still they dropped to many passes. Grade C
DEFENSE[/b]
Defensive Line - Almost a flawless performance against a huge VUL offensive line. They were quick and exploded off the ball. The tackles were very solid against the run. A few time they lost containment on the qb but still a very solid performance Grade A
Linebackers - Another solid performance. Great in helping to stop the run and excellent pass coverage on short routes. Overall they wrapped up pretty good. Grade A
Defensive Backs - Only gave up one touchdown but it could have been worse if VUL had a decent passing game. T. Webb was badly fooled on a long pass that the VUL QB overthrew. The corners are going to be our achilles heel. Grade C-
Special Teams - Punting was ok but was overshadowed by VUL's punter who was spectacular. Run backs were good but we fumbled one return. Kickoff coverage was pretty good. Grade C
Coaching - After a slow first qtr Broadway and Pizzo went long ball on em which was a good adjustment. With 7 fumbles extra attention will have to be spent on ball security. If we fumble this many times vs. App State they will score 80 pts on us. Also had 8 penalties. Good job of getting the plays in on time. Grade C
Overall Team Performance - It was great to get a win but against better competition the results would have been a lot closer. There's a lot of work to be done but I did see improvement over last season. Still a win is a win. Overall performance = Grade C

The coaching was A-. We didn't have delay of game penalties nor did we have the normal A&T coaching drama during the game. They made adjustments and put players(Ricky) in position to make plays. The staff had a disciplined and well conditioned group. It isn't easy to make these kind of improvements with players that you inherit. Furthermore, this new staff had to deal with the normal A&T administration and still fielded a good team.

The team should be very proud for not having as many penalties. Big improvement in that area.

The "crispness" of the play calling and was way better. The units moving on and off the field, being ready, and the seconds left on the play clock were all HUGE improvements from last year.

Decks...I agree with your assessment, except for the dbs. The dbs are a true liability right now. Not that I'm being over critical but, for VUL to score on a passing route that they had tried twice previously on the same drive and our corner never was in position to make a play on the ball was terrible. I can see bombs over bagdad is a coming. I would lower their grade to a "D" at best. All in all...it was a good overall team effort. But, Broadway is 100 percent correct...we do have to get better. Runningbacks had too many fumbles as well.

Well, they say the biggest improvement comes in game two. Unfortunately, that will hold true for App as well. But they really looked terrible against Va Tech. I know it was Va Tech, but I've never seen App look that bad.
Our running game (or lack thereof) and defense worry me. If nothing else, playing against a team that stresses execution will be good for us. This past week it seems it was all talent and very little execution.

Yeah, I think it's a double-edged sword on defense. We are so small up front on "D" so we are at a liability for "smash mouth" running attacks and we are not extremely good on da back end (defensive backs). Losing D'Vonte Graham really hurts because there is no "playmaker" back there now. Ferrell is decent but the rest of the guys have not proven themselves. I really think we will be better up front (one of "Funkmaster's talents) as the season unfolds and suspect on da back end......Most definitely, Kindle can sling it but he must continue to play smart and develop a pocket awareness and know when to get rid of the ball and when to "slide." Maybe "His Most Funkness" did not want to give Ricky Lewis a run at QB Saturady because he wanted Kindle to get back in the swing after being out all last year and didn't want to expose "Tricky" Ricky to any film or scouting reports for our upcoming MEAC schedule. You can believe that "Tricky" will be utilized more as the season progresses........I'm hoping "Little Sweetness" Mayhew and Torrain "Mr. Electricity" Warren are back soon. We are so depleted talent-wise when it comes to overall numbers because iof the restrictions on scholarships that it is important that we stay healthy........ So, all things considered, I grade us out overall at a B- with a lot of work still left to do. Fumbles are part of the game...a LOT of fumbles are not excusable!!..........BGMM gets a A- and did an excellent job as a preview and with no other band competiton in da house represented........ GOLDEN DELITES, GOLDEN DELITES, GOLDEN DELITES gits me me with a AAA+++ grade. Lawd have mussy!!! GO AGGIES GO

I am not saying anything about our chances to play a decent game against App. I know VT is the #13 team in the Nation and will probably move up at some point in this young season; but they hung 7 TD's on App before they even scored plus App's scoring can very late in the game when I am sure VT was waaay down the bench into the 3rd string.

The running game might actually be decent if they stop fumbling the ball. Seven fumbles against a team like VUL is inexcuseable.

Excellent analysis Dex.
Fumbling is easy to correct so I’m not too worried about it at this point.
I give the coaches a B+ for adjusting to what the defense was giving them. The coaches didn’t keep trying to run up the middle. Refreshing.

Most of the time when a Back Fumbles he is just trying to do to much to get that extra yard. Are some times it just a good hit on the ball not so much on the Back. They need to know when to get down. Mayhew should no this. Rags was good at that get what you need and the rest will come.

"Rick is a ball player," said Broadway. "He can do so many things, and he can do so many things well. You would like to have four or five of those guys. He would be unbelievable if we could put him in one position and leave him there, but because of our lack of numbers we have to put him at running back and quarterback and wide receiver too."
And to think R. Lewis could barely make it on the field for more than a few plays per game last year and Broadway has him playing everything but def !!!
