Savannah State Univ head basketball coach Horace Broadnax i think broadnax is a very good coach and would be an excellent selection as our next head coach. but right now, broadnax has a better basketball facility at ssu. not sure we could sway him to leave ssu for a&t unless we offer him significantly more money...

Whats the average pay for MEAC Head Basketball coaches and what's the average pay for those coaches in other Mid-Major and Low-Major conferences?
I think if we can somehow pay the next HC anywhere near $200K, we could get a pretty decent coach with adequate HC experience on the D-1 level as long as the Chancellor & AD can increase the budget to over the 1 million mark for basketball to be tops in the MEAC spending wise.

he'd never come to an hbcu. his ga. tech salary probably exceeds our entire basketball budget. we can forget about going after major d1 head coaches. our best bet is to look at d1 assistants and d2 head coaches. perhaps we could find a "jewel" in the ciaa... Well if there was ever an commitment from Chancellor Martin and Mr. Hilton to spend $1million+/yr on basketball, we could certainly bring in a pretty decent coach with Div-1 HC experience in a Mid-Major conference. westcoast, i wouldn't hold my breath on that one. most midmajor head coaches view hbcu's as a step down. we'd have to find one who likely could not find another midmajor head coach job...

We have to make A&T as attractive as possible. Times are changing. That HBCU tag is becoming more minor by the year. It's just we don't spend enough as a whole. look at that chart and look at the numbers that Decks posted. if every MEAC school made the commitment to spend more than they do, the basketball will get better. It seems that Chancellor has to lead that charge instead of being satisfied spending along the MEAC Average. And not only will we have to spend more, we will have to spend wisely. Just can't throw money into the wind. We have to continue to improve the strength program for the Basketball teams. Look to revamping Corbett. Spend more on assistant coaches. Maybe look to invest in a small basketball practice facility. Find a way to get involved in the arms race. The beauty of it all is that it doesn't take THAT much more money to develop and cultivate a pretty decent mid-major program. If we can find $250,000 - $300,000 to inject into Men's basketball things will continue to improve. WE just can't stay stagnant nor spend stupid.

our men's basketball program reminds me of scsu's football program. scsu dominated the meac from '74 to '83, winning 9 out of 10 meac championships. shortly afterwards, scsu hit a slump and didn't win but 1 championship over the next 20 years. but early in the 2000's, scsu recommitted themselves to football and began funding their program more than just about all other meac schools. hence, the scsu football renaissance began and scsu restored their dominance of the meac winning 4 out of the last 7 meac championships since 2004.
a&t men's basketball needs a similar "renaissance". we need to examine the funding of our program and the status of our basketball facilities. once our funding and facilities are in order, we can then "legitimately" hold any head basketball coach to high standards in terms of wins, losses, and championships. but we must take care of our infrastructure first...

It seems like from listening to you "experts", the problem is the university and not Eaves..I think some of us have been saying that all along...We have all of the blueprints on how to build a program, and we are not following any of the guidelines..
Here's another question for you guys..What does a typical MEAC recruit look like? How good do you have to be to be a "MEAC" recruit? We know what a high major recruit looks like: a. McDonalds All American b. Big Time Scorer or from Big Time Program c. Future pro potential d. 4 or 5 stars on scout and rivals (preferrably 5) 3. 90+ on ESPN
We know what an Ivy League Recruit Looks Like a. 2000+ SAT score on all 3 parts b. Attended a prep school for high school or post grad c. 2 years starter on varsity d. close to 1000 pt scorer in high school
Now to say that we offered Scottie Reynolds as a freshman, what does that mean? I know a few local kids Eaves have offered that we had no chance of getting..PJ Hairston, William Graves, Shammar Bowden..
Now with the Horace Broadnax line..do you know that this is his second time around?...had his first head coaching job with Bethune Cookman after playing at Georgetown..Guys a lawyer that got his law degree after playing for John Thompson..Dont know what he did after BCC fired him, but I do remember that his record was not as good as Eaves..just looked his record up 97-98 1-26 98-99 11-16 99-00 14-15 00-01 10-19 01-02 12-17 and he won coach of the year twice 99-00 and 00-01
I really think this is who we should hire..LOL ! ! ! !

We have to make A&T attractive to those coaches and players that schools in the CAA & A-10 and other Quality teams in these good Mid-Major Conferences are getting. And hopefully, the new hires we made in Athletics and in the Admissions office will make it easier to enroll our recruits. But overall, I agree, along with others I think with what you are saying Aggie82.

there are plenty of us who know a little bit about ball...let me give you another example of our beloved MEAC conference...My son was offered a full basketball scholarship by western carolina when he was a soph...they pulled the offer late in the deal...i contacted Norfolk, Hampton and UMES; they never responded...Coach Eaves only had one scholly and told me he would let him play, but he couldnt give him any money.....Couldnt even find a link to send his info to FAMU...Long story short, I tried to hand deliver the kid...No takers..
So I contacted a couple of prep schools: got a 95% financial aid package $38K on a $42K bill (no loans) to Phillips Exeter, number 5 academic prep school in the country..Columbia and Princeton recruiting him...No bragging, he wanted to go to a HBCU, but no takers...There's something terribly wrong with this scenario when programs turn down 4.0 athletes that can play..

Look at the following names I mentioned on a previous thread: bluedeathvalley.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=main&action=display&thread=7094My list includes a list of quality DI asst coaches, some of whom with past head coaching experience. My list also includes previous DI head coaches.....WHO WON SOMEWHERE. That includes some winning at previous HBCUs. Just like football, the key to hiring our next basketball coach is to find someone who won somewhere - preferrably on a larger scale. To have a kneejerk answer and think of the first coach that comes to mind (Horace Broadnax) doesn't make sense. Key points: 1) We do need to show a commitment by upping the finances needed to put forth a quality program 2) We must not underestimate what we have and whom we can get 3) Although it is one job, there's more than one person qualified to do a good job, which leads to point 4 4) CONSTRUCT A LIST OF QUALIFIED CANDIDATES (not just have one person on your mind). We can find a quality coach that can bring us back to where we deserve to be - ON TOP. However we ain't getting back on top unless Aggie Nation first believes we can and encourage our administration to find the right coach and get Aggie Nation financially and emotionally involved in resurrecting our basketball program..... IT CAN BE DONE FOLKS...

I am not saying keep him or fire him but if anyone thinks we cant find a quality Coach you guys are nuts. Superstar gave you a list of some names and in addition to that there are always good quality Coaches at the DII level dying to Coach a D1 team - please!! And you want have to break the bank - there is aways someone looking for a shot.
What about Stith ? Many people say he was responsible for much of Colemans growth this year.

Just like football, the key to hiring our next basketball coach is to find someone who won somewhere - preferrably on a larger scale. To have a kneejerk answer and think of the first coach that comes to mind (Horace Broadnax) doesn't make sense. if you're referring to my characterization of broadnax being a good fit for our program, there's nothing "kneejerk" about that statement at all. but i will tell you what's "kneejerk". first of all, i've clearly stated that i am not an advocate that eaves be fired. let me repeat that, because some folk like you can't seem to comprehend very well. again, i've clearly stated "repeatedly" that i am not an advocate that eaves be fired! secondly, my "opinion" that broadnax would be a good fit at a&t is in no way an "endorsement" to hire the guy! you're "over reacting" dude! please show me where i stated that we should fire eaves and hire broadnax? how can someone who does not advocate firing eaves make a so called "kneejerk" decision to hire broadnax? if there's anything "kneejerk" on this thread, its your "over reaction" to someone's opinion. and by the way, did you find where i stated that we should fire eaves and hire broadnax yet? of course not! again, let me repeat because some folk have a hard time comprehending what they read on message boards. if there's anything "kneejerk" on this thread, its your "over reaction" to someone's opinion. what's truly "kneejerk" on this thread, is your ridiculous offer (made behind a screen name) to donate some "bogus" $10,000 towards the firing of coach eaves as if that's gonna make a dent in the remaining 2 years on eaves' contract. yeah, right. fire a coach who has 2 years remaining on his contract but hey, here's $10k to cover the cost. yet, you got the nerve to characterize someone else's opinion as "kneejerk"? i think you'll find that a mirror works quite well when you characterize someone else's opinion as "kneejerk"...
