NCCU uncovers secret account BY JAY PRICE - Staff Writer Jones received payments.DURHAM N.C. Central University has asked state and local prosecutors to help it recover hundreds of thousands of dollars in what state auditors are calling questionable payments from a secret bank account. The former head of an education agency based at NCCU diverted more than $1 million into the undisclosed account over a six-year period, spent nearly $300,000 of it on herself and improperly paid $62,000 to a former NCCU provost, according to a state audit released Tuesday. Nan Coleman, executive director of the Historically Minority Colleges and University Consortium, was fired in 2009 for poor performance, and Chancellor Charlie Nelms ordered an internal audit of the program. NCCU turned over its findings to state auditors last year. They found that from 2004 to 2009 Coleman had spent $287,000 from the account on herself and improperly paid tens of thousands more to others associated with the program, including nearly $62,000 to former Provost Beverly Washington Jones, according to the audit report. Neither Jones nor her attorney returned calls Tuesday. Rhonda Young, one of two attorneys representing Coleman, said she hadn't had time to read the audit and couldn't comment yet on its contents. Will we (HBCU's) ever learn to implement and maintain proper controls? How in the hell do you allow one person to have sole control over a million dollar fund? SMH

Former Chancellor Ammons and his two Provosts (one mention in the article) are at fault. The same three claim they had no knowledge of an out-of-state, off-campus school in Atlanta with the good Bishop Eddie Long. Yes the same loving reverend who beat his wife and enticed teenage boys with gifts and goofy pictures of himself.
Thank goodness NCCU as a whole is a valuable asset to the state of NC.

Yeah but given the fact this Republican dominated socially conservative legislature are cutting UNC campus budgets left and right this is not the way to protect yourself if you are running an HBCU. Someone will pay for this. I don't know who or how but someone will be made an example of.

Nelms is still cleaning up mess from before he arrived at NCCU he has already positioned himself in this manner. The former administrators in question are currently getting lawyer'd up as we speak.

I hope that former Chancellor Ammons is one of those "getting lawyer'd up!" Folks in Tallahassee are finally starting to "see the light" of what a farce he is.
