TELEVISION GAMES ENHANCE AGGIES HOME FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Both TV games are against Tidewater foes
GREENSBORO, June 22, 2007 – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released their ESPNU television schedule today and the North Carolina A&T football team is on it twice. The Aggies will play both television games from Aggie Stadium after going last season without having a televised game at home.
Their first television game of the 2007 season will be against Hampton on a tape delayed basis. The game will be played at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15, but will be aired later that same night at 10. On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Sggies will face Norfolk State live from Aggie Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Having two games on ESPNU this season is an added bonus for the N.C. A&T program and its fans because of the announcement in May that ESPNU will be made available to those who subscribe to Time Warner Cable’s digital package.
“The more people who see you play and know you play on national television every year, the better it helps your recruiting and gives your school positive exposure,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Lee Fobbs.
Another added bonus for the Aggies is that the two television games add to what is already an impressive home schedule. In addition to playing two nationally-televised home games, the Aggies will renew their 78-year old rivalry with N.C. Central on Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. N.C. A&T’s Homecoming game, one of the biggest events in the Triad area each year, is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Sandwiched in between those high-profile games is a showdown with Delaware State on Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m., which will also serve as University Day.
“It’s really an exciting schedule because we have a lot of opportunities to play at home in front of a larger number of our fans and supporters,’’ said Fobbs. “When our young men can look up in the stands and see a large number of people wearing gold and cheering them on, it definitely motives them.”
The Aggies open the 2007 against rival Winston-Salem State on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m., at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem. The following week the Aggies will head west to Los Angeles to play in the Angel City Classic inside the historic L.A. Coliseum against Prairie View A&M at 2:30 p.m., pacific standard time.
“The classic in (Los Angeles) is great for everybody. It gives our fans a spectacular place to visit. It exposes our young men to an environment and an area many of them have seen and heard about but never experienced. Also, playing in the L.A. Coliseum will be an excellent venture for them. But they will also know that our main reason as football team for going out there is to win a football game.”

WARNING: Not all HBCU Classics have their act together.
By Bill Shea 6:00 am, June 25, 2007
Robert Porcher is working to get multiyear deals in place for teams to play in the Detroit Football Classic and expects to announce details for the 2008 game by the end of summer.
The former Detroit Lions defensive lineman, who co-founded the classic in 2002, said earlier this month the game at Ford Field between teams from historically black colleges is taking a one-year hiatus because a financial agreement with Alabama State University and Grambling State University couldn’t be reached in time for this season.
This would have been the fifth classic, but would have been played in November because of scheduling conflicts with the schools. The first four were played on Labor Day weekend.
Porcher declined to say what it costs to stage the game, or what financial issues kept the schools from reaching a deal. He did say the event costs more than $1 million to hold and promote.
“We just could not get the numbers worked out between the schools and it didn’t make sense to prolong it any longer,” he said.
Now, he’s going to pursue a three- to four-year deal for teams to play starting in 2008, preferably on Labor Day weekend. Porcher also is beginning to seek a broadcast deal.
He said Grambling and Alabama State won’t be candidates in 2008, but could be in the future. He said he has a short list of the most popular historically black college football powerhouses, but declined to name teams.
Boosting attendance is another goal. Last year, Delaware State University beat Florida A&M University 34-14 in front of 29,713 fans. The first Detroit Football Classic, between Florida A&M and Alabama State, was played in front of more than 54,000.
Andy Appleby, chairman and CEO of General Sports and Entertainment L.L.C. in Rochester, said an attendance decline wasn’t surprising.
“(The game is) a little bit of a victim of its own success,” he said.
Appleby doesn’t believe a year off will hurt the event.
“It’s the type of event that you can take a year off with,” he said. “It’s sort of a cultural event, a new event each year,” he said.
Mike Dietz, president and director of Dietz Trott Sports & Entertainment in Bingham Farms, disagrees.
“It’s not a good idea to take a year off because you lose continuity,” he said. “People that are used to going and are looking for it, it’s suddenly not there.”
That’s not the only worry, Dietz said.
“The organizers also risk losing an awesome weekend date to another event. That could be a prime date for another organizer,” he said. Next year’s game will be up against the second year of the revived Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.
The classic is one of the best-
attended football games at the venue after the Lions, said Risa Balayem, director of communications at Ford Field. The stadium also hosts an annual Eastern Michigan University game, the Mid-American Conference championship game and the Motor City Bowl.
“We’ll definitely hold the Labor Day date for (the game),” she said.
Porcher said he has assurances from his major sponsors, which include Ford Motor Co., Comerica Inc., Fifth Third Bank and Pepsi, that they’ll be back in 2008.
Porcher, who retired from the Lions in 2004 and is chairman of the Detroit Metro Sports Commission, is a graduate of South Carolina State University, a historically black school. He is president of Detroit Football Classic L.L.C., which he co-founded with local restaurateur Frank Taylor in 2002. Porcher is vice president of Taylor’s Detroit-based Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group L.L.C.

They must mean POWERHOUSE as far as engineering or some other form of academics because we both suck at football

Ok, so who is planning on making this road trip? The wife, daughter and I just got plane tickets, we're flying in Wednesday night so we have time to hit Six Flags, the beaches and do some sightseeing. We're now trying to figure out where we want to stay; not sure if we want to stay at the host hotel.

And be sure to lock up that rent-a-car early and be warned that traffic to six-flags will be brutal!

I went through the website to get the discounted rate for the Angel City Classic. Regular room rate is $169 a night! Is that the Westin Bonaventure, the host hotel for the Aggies?

Stay in a hotel by LAX such as the Airport marriot Thanks, we're definitely considering that. We were looking at the Renaissance Montura (4star) and the Embassy Suites Airport North (includes complimentary breakfast buffet), plus a few others. Westcoastaggie, do you live in LA?

Man, I don't plan on staying at a hotel. My sister lives in LA, so unless I get the ahhh HELL naw, that's where we will be. I received a hotel alert via email. I did check out availability and that price came up. I think they are two different hotels.

If the lord spare me and the creek don't rise, I'll be there!!! I have heard a lot of Aggies talking about going out to the game. This says it all about Aggie Pride, with the kind of record that we have had for the last few years Aggies are still excited about Aggie football. Dam, I love being an Aggie!!!!!!!!!!
