who we gonna get? Why do yall think Eaves is that bad?..Let's be honest..Is he really underachieving? Truthfully, I think NC is a tough state to recruit in...Way too many college choices in NC and SC..Big South has Gardner Webb, High Point, UNC Asheville, Winthrop, Charleston Southern...Southern Conference has WCU, UNCG, Davidson, Elon, App State, Furman, Citadel, Wofford, College of Charleston...How does our budget stack up against these schools?
How many of these programs win on a regular basis? None of them ! ! ! Would you want any of these coaches at A&T? Davidson won because of Step Curry, not Coach McKillop...Elon fired their coach, but they are not doing any better...Buzz won the Northern division of the Southern Conference and parlayed that into a raise and a new gig at UNCW..High Point fired their coach and they are still average...Dement hasnt won in a while, he's still there...
I am sure that all of these guys, like Eaves are pretty good coaches; but talent makes a team good, not coaching, and you cant make kids come to your school...
Our kids have to come out and play every nite..I think our talent is decent, but they are very limited in what they can do..Everyone is one dimensional...But that's all that's available at the low major level...
I would sure love to play for him the way he let's the guards shoot ! ! !

Corbett won in NC, so did Capel. Bibbs is doing just fine. As for coaching, anyone that plays him knows to trap him. he struggles every year with the backcourt trap. For a guy who played point guard we seem to have a shortage of them every year.
After Coleman leaves this year the outlook does not look so bright. I dont see a lot of development with the rest of the team.

Believe it or not but Eaves is improving. He changed his coaching style and with help of the new Assistant Coach he was able to add to his staff, Coleman is putting up MEAC POY numbers and is kept is in all but one MEAC Conf. Game. Heck we Lost to Morgan by 2 in Baltimore. the only bad loss we had was against Coppin State.
If we were able to keep Justin Black, we would actually be in the top 3 of the conference this season.
We ain't there yet but we are finally on our way. A&T is starting to FINALLY SUPPORT the guy and it's showing!
No matter who the coach is, the Administration has to support him. So if anything, we have to be vouching for more support which will include a bigger recruiting budget so that he can compete for the talent better in state and nationally.
By the way, Eaves brings in way too much money into athletics for us just to get rid of him. But no matter who we have as the Basketball HC, we as Alumni/Fans must continue to push for increased $upport of the Basketball Program. No matter who the coach is, if he isn't getting the support, he isn't going to win.

;D :)Eaves was a good thing for our program when he signed on because the BB program was at an all-time low, very similar to the football team before our most recent hire this week. Eaves rolled up his sleeves and and took a team that won one game the previous year and brought it back to the middle of the pack in the MEAC. I am grateful. However, we need someone else once his present contract expires that will get us to the next tier in our conference and on the mid-major level. His basketball pedigree speaks for itself but A&T was his first, and only head coaching job and, in my opinion, we will continue to be a .500 team in the MEAC under Eaves the last 5 yrs.,including this year,he has a MEAC record of 38-36(barely above .500). Last year he said before the season started his recruiting class was the best since he had been at "T". His frosh COMBINED to average 4.3 pts & 2.6 reb/game.Why did he say this?? Because it was a contract year for him. He told Billy Covington on WNAA, "the program is at a point where we dont have to recruit JUCO players." Then retracted himself 2 months later after he got a new contract. His tenure is the 3rd longest of any MEAC coaches. Yet, he canot beat Morgan St., Hampton, WSSU, or NCCU. His team's APR is one of the highest yr after yr--I applaud him for all he has done in bringing us back to respectability. I just know he is not the one who will take us to the top in our conference. We played S.CarSt. and led by 3 w/11 sec on clock they bring it up. We have 3 fouls to give before we put them on the line. Instead of fouling immediately and let them take it out again--we let them shoot and they tied the game luckly we won in OT. I can give you many more examples. It's a new day we want EXCELLENCE not mediocrity. Who is a new candidate?? We dont have torush right now because he still has 2 yrs. left on contract but it allows us enough timeto keep our eyes open. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE!!!! BORN AND BRED!

Forgot one side note-----Any coach can schedule games vs. major-level colleges and get a check. Those top tier teams are glad to have and pay mid-majors to come in to pad their records and to be quite frank, to a lot of those schools it is an opportunity to experiment for their conference season.

Mixed emotions. I will say Eaves is doing a much better job Coaching this year as compared to last year and three years ago.
Because he brings in alot of Money does not impress me any MEAC school that goes on the road to play a top kothch program is going to get paid. Thats no special talent.
Unlike football the program is not bottom of the basement and laughing stock of the conference. In addition Eaves has a couple other things going for him. He represents the University well in a press conference (he sounds intelligent). Two his graduation rate is very good. One other negative he always puts hiself in a position of having a young team. Once Coleman is gone he is gone have to look to that bench of current freshman i.e. Cooper, Lester, Upchurch. And with limited exp. the first two will struggle to get that feet under them.
All that being said if he cant put together a regular season conference championship or make it to the MEAC finals I think he will be hard press to get a contract renewal. Its a tough call with Eaves would not suprise me if we lost in the first round of the tourney also would not suprise me if we won the entire thing. Forget about all the things he cant effect; because if you look down the hall Bibbs is in the same boat but she finds away to get a sail up move the boat!!!!!

I agree with you 'aggie2ru'. All HBCU Schools and even White Schools on our level schedule money games. That is no excuse to keep Eaves. Any coach can and will continue to do that. Eaves has had more than his fare share to get us to the top where we were for many years and he did not do that. It does not take 8 years or more to build a program that can win Championships. Morgan States coach won in his 2nd or 3rd year. Eaves did bring us out of the hole that we were in and I appreciate that. However, it has taken him too long to win a MEAC Championship. He will always be a .500 coach and that is a fact. He has the talent to win the MEAC this year. This team is his best chance since he has been here. He has to win it all for me to keep his job. That 'white' coach that is sitting beside him on the bench was not hired for decoration. He is gently waiting in the 'cut' for his job.

aggie82 ... our guards can's shoot their way out of a wet paper bag. I don't understand why our team can't shoot on their own goals. Every visiting team can come in and hit shots from the student union and we can't hit a simple lay up. We lost to NCCU because we missed too many wide open shots from the corner and bad free throw shooting. That is coaching. We don't have one good pure shooter. Eaves claim we do but I haven't seen him yet. There are coaches out there that are capable of coming to A&T and taking us to the top. I do agree we have to back him financially as well by the Alumni. We need to start looking for that coach soon because we will always be a .500 team by the present staff. When Coleman leaves we are going to be a .400 team.

Eaves doesn't deserve firing right now. He is actually on the upswing if they don't collapse this year it makes NO SENSE to fire a coach on the upswing. No one can deny they are better than last year. If A&T fires Eaves while he is on the upswing the program will end up just like football.
Let the man finish this season out and see how he does replacing Coleman. If both those results are terrible then you have an argument.

Oh, and beating Central by more than 10 down in Durham would go a long way Its funny, he's the one coach that hasn't had the EXTREME pressure of beating NCCU year in and year out. He's about to find out that when you lose to them you start wondering about the status of your job.

So if you fire Eaves who should the univesity try to hire? What type of coach would you expect to get?

;D :)Listen we can't just be complacent and not try and improve. There are plenty of excellent coaches available, we just need to make correct choices when we attempt to get better. Making bad choices is what got us behind the eight ball when we have hired football and basketball coaches (Curtis Hunter) in the past. Don't think for a minute we can't do and get better results. Eaves needs to know that we are grateful for where we are now compared to where we were 8 yrs ago. But at the same time our BB team has to take the next step. I don't see that happening w/him. Coleman will be gone next year and it took a full 4 years for him to develop at the 5 spot. There is nobody behind him that even closely shows they can take his place. What are we going to do shoot 3's next yr like we did in 09-10? I might as well put my uniform on because I can still do a little sumthing. I support our school and athletic dept. 100% but I do not thinkl Eaves will take us to a championship.

who's out there that you would hire Aggie2ru? Have you even thought what it would take to fire Eaves and then get someone to come in. Firing Eaves would mean you CAN hire someone with a better track record than Eaves. Who's out there like that and would be willing to come to A&T?
