New renovation plan proposed for War Memorial Stadium Thursday, April 15, 2010 (Updated 8:24 am) By Amanda Lehmert Staff Writer GREENSBORO — The city’s War Memorial Stadium may soon get a long-awaited face-lift. But under current budget restrictions, much of the historic structure would have to be demolished. After failing to find any other resources to help refurbish the 84-year-old stadium, the city staff is recommending that $1.3 million in previously approved funds be used to do as much restoration as possible right now. The current plan would save the unique arched entryway to the stadium, but much of the rest of the building would be knocked down, including the seating inside. The plan likely wouldn’t include updates like new locker rooms and concession stands. On Wednesday night, the Parks and Recreation Commission voted to ask the City Council to start the project, as a way to get something done at the stadium. Meanwhile, historic preservationists are researching possible alternate fundraising to save more of the historic structure. City leaders have gone back and forth for years considering options for restoring the 1926 stadium. After voters turned down a request to fund a $5.5 million renovation in 2006 , the City Council approved $1.5 million in bonds to do some work on the stadium. Since then, city staff has proposed everything from small-scale renovations that would simply put off the building’s deterioration to a $3.7 million re-imagining of the site as an outdoor marketplace. www.news-record.com/content/2010/04/14/article/new_renovation_plan_proposed_for_war_memorial_stadium

"The issue will soon be scheduled to come before the City Council for approval. In the meantime, the city staff and other groups will explore alternative ways to pay for restoring more of the historic structure or adding other amenities.
Jackson said the city staff has talked with N.C. A&T officials about helping fund concession stands or locker rooms.
The university and Greensboro College host their home baseball games at the stadium."

Has A&T offered to buy it? that would be a good idea... because we don't want to get land locked any more than we are.. but we would still need to find a grant to restore war memorial to the grandure it deserves... the city design is a travesty... war memorial was an icon in its day... the city design has reduced it to a high school field... war memorial should be a stadium with press box.. with no less than 1500 seats.. major league club house locker rooms & indoor facilities.. ie.. batting cages.. pitching mounds.. etc... you hear all the talk about how we should honor our military.. but yet the officals of g'boro wants to honor our veterans by turning one of the finest stadiums of its time into a high school field... this should not only out rage all veterans.. but a&t officials as well... look at the money homecoming brings to the city... look at the money these big track meets bring to the city... the tax money generated could fund a 1st class restoration project... & don't say it can't be done... because revenue from homecoming & the track meets will be used to build the aquatics center at the coliseum... so why not war memorial... ? this side of town always gets the shaft... & our spineless leaders don't have the guts to fight for whats right... they just accept the bull #$%#...

In my opinion, we shouldn't have to buy it. The city should donate to us or at worst sell it for a nominal fee like $1.

If the City has $1 Million to restore War Memorial and cant come up with any more funding then why wouldn't they just donate it to A&T and allow the $1 Million to help begin the restoration? Reverting the field to little more than a sandlot would belittle the fact that the A&T Baseball team uses that stadium to host all of its games. Sooner or later someone inside the University needs to say we want it or we don't want it.
Its almost as if they are waving a bone in front of our faces... Sad but true.

Wake bought Ernie Shore Stadium from W-S for a cheap fee (I think $2-3 million) when they built the new downtown stadium. I'm surprised the city of G'boro didn't sell War Memorial to A&T when they opened the new park too. I haven't seen War Memorial since I was in college (10 years ago) but even then it wasn't worth a million. I'd venture a guess that it's worth a lot less now.
A lot of history in that place, though. Hope someone can restore it to look great again.

Ernie Shore was in much better condition than War Memorial. A&T needs to have secured funding in place for renovation and yearly maintenance before entering an agreement to purchase WM.
Currently, A&T needs a backup plan in case War Memorial deteriorates to the point where it becomes condemned.

if there is the will to get something done.. there is definitely a way... but 1st you have to care about your student athletes whether they play football or in this case.. baseball...
let the kids know you care.. show them you care.. don't just write them off because baseball may not be high on your priority list... bottom line.. take care of your own...

Given the amount of money homecoming provides to the city, methinks it would be a fair trade to sign it over to A&T and call it even. Once we get it, we can put a couple of classrooms in it and get state money to repair it as a classroom facility.
I don't know how feasible all of that is but it's worth a look.
