NEWMAN, COOK HAVE BIG NIGHTS
GREENSBORO – Calesio Newman and Ta’Wuana “Tweet” Cook were left looking for to-go boxes following the 2010 North Carolina A&T All-Sports Banquet, and it wasn’t because they were trying to take away some leftovers.
The two senior Aggie athletes needed a way to take out all the trophies they collected. They both came away with four trophies apiece. Their haul for both included Cook winning the athletics department’s Female Athlete of the Year award, and Newman winning the Male Athlete of the Year honor.
Cook also took home the department’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year award along with team MVP honors. Cook’s first award of the night came when she received the prestigious Aggie Club award given to the athlete who has brought local and national attention to A&T athletics.
Newman’s great night started when the North Carolina A&T Sports Hall of Fame handed him the prestigious Hall of Fame award. The Hall of Fame award recognizes an Aggie athlete who excels inside and outside the athletic arena. He shared men’s indoor and outdoor track and field MVP honors with fellow senior David McFadgen.
Cook and Newman’s night was well deserved.
Cook was a part of the greatest run in the history of A&T’s women’s basketball program. In four years, she helped the Aggies win 91 times – 56 times in the MEAC – while collecting three MEAC regular-season titles, two WNIT appearances, one MEAC Tournament title and one NCAA appearance.
Cook led the Aggies in scoring this season. After a disappointing loss in the 2010 MEAC Tournament, Cook helped the Aggies bounce back with a history-making run in the WNIT. The Aggies became the first NCAA Division I black college or university to win two games in a national postseason tournament thanks to Cook’s contributions.
Cook was a first-team All-MEAC selection this past season, and the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association named her first-team all-state. She leaves the school as the all-time assist leader, and only one other Aggie in school history (Malveata Johnson) has scored more points than Cook’s 1,723.
If Newman makes the NCAA Division I East Championships, it will mark the fourth straight year he became an East qualifier. He has also qualified for the NCAA National Championships twice. In 2009, he made it to the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Newman is a two-time MEAC Outdoor champion in the 100 meters. In February, he won the MEAC Indoor championship in the 60 meters by running a 6.77.
Newman has won 10 100 meter races during his career. Two seasons ago, he ran the 100 meters faster than any other Aggie in school history when he posted a time of 10.08 (wind-aided) at the Sea Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Newman will go for his third straight MEAC title in the 100 May 6-8 when the Aggies compete in the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at A&T’s Irwin Belk Track.
Cook and Newman were not the only two who came away with hardware. In fact, Cook’s night was a part of a larger night for the women’s basketball program. Amber Calvin helped women’s basketball sweep department awards on the women’s side when she was named Female Rookie of the Year. The Victory Club Foundation honored head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs as the Outstanding Coach of the Year. Senior Lamona Smalley won the Athletics Director Choice Award for exhibiting excellent school spirit and pride.
The other two male awards went to baseball’s Nick Rogers and football’s Mike Mayhew. Mayhew won Male Rookie of the Year after leading the Aggies in rushing yards, touchdowns and carries. Mayhew also took home team awards for Offensive MVP and MVP.
Rogers earned Senior Male Athlete of the Year. Rogers has 10 home runs on the season and ranks among the nation’s best in RBIs per game. Rogers is also a solid pitcher for the Aggies. He is 6-3 so far this season with a team-leading 59 strikeouts.
There were two additional departmental awards handed out. The team academic award went to the bowling team. The Champs Life Skills/SAAC Award went to baseball’s Jonathan Smith and volleyball’s LaShawn White.
