RECRUITING Norfolk State Women
Clark Signs 2 JC Players to Complete 2012 Recruiting Class Mike Bello, Asst. SID 5/14/2012 11:08:00 AM NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women’s basketball head coach Debra Clark announced the signings of a pair of junior college players on Monday to complete the 2012 recruiting class for the Spartan basketball program.
Teammates Kashay Barnes and Aivah Parham will join NSU after leading Monroe College in New York to the National Junior College Association of America (NJCAA) Division II national championship last season.
Barnes is a 5-7 combo guard who can play at both the point guard and two-guard positions, according to Clark. A long and lanky 5-foot-10, Parham will play the wing spot for NSU.
“We are very excited to have Kashay and Aivah join our program,” said Clark. “Kashay will be looked upon to add depth and experience at the point guard position as well as the two-guard spot. She’s a very strong, athletic player who also shoots the 3 well. Her experience and decision making at the point-guard position will be a definite asset for us.
“Aivah is a very long, athletic wing player. Her greatest strength is her ability to score both from the 3 and inside.”
A native of Baltimore, Parham earned first-team All-America status after tallying 15.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game her sophomore year in 2011-12. The team captain earned Region 15 MVP honors and was a member of the all-tournament team in the NJCAA playoffs. Parham added 2.1 steals and 1.0 assists on the year while shooting 41 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free throw line.
Barnes, meanwhile, was named MVP of the NJCAA tournament after averaging 18.3 points per game in four contests. The Frederick, Md., native finished the season with 10.3 points, 3.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 37 percent from the field, including 38 percent (53-of-140) from 3-point range.
Barnes added 26 points and eight assists in the national championship game against Lake Michigan College. Parham tallied 22 points and six rebounds in the title contest and 18.5 points per game during the tournament.
Barnes also averaged 13.6 points, 2.6 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game her freshman year in 2010-11 at Potomac State College. Parham was a member of the 2010-11 national championship team squad at Monroe as well, averaging 5.8 points and 5.4 rebounds during her freshman campaign.
In addition to Barnes and Parham, NSU will also welcome the services of transfer Kristian Parker, who sat out the 2011-12 season after playing the previous year for NJIT. During her one year there, Parker made 19 starts in 28 games as a freshman for the Highlanders, tallying 3.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game with 23 blocks.
“We’re looking forward to Krissy’s physical presence to add depth in the post,” stated Clark. “She’s an extremely strong player with great hands who will be looked upon to contribute in the areas of scoring and rebounding.”
Clark’s 2012 recruiting class also includes small forward Tamara Majette out of C.D. Hylton High School in Manassas, Va., who signed with NSU in the early period last November.
NSU finished the 2011-12 season 12-17 overall and 6-10 in MEAC play. The Spartans tied for the most wins in a season over the past 10 years and had more conference wins than the previous four years combined. NSU will return 11 letterwinners from that squad for the 2012-13 season.
Morgan State Women
BALTIMORE, Md. (May 9, 2012)-Morgan State women's basketball head coach Donald Beasley has announced the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Sabrina Montgomery, Alauna Jackson, Dinah Jones, Summer Reeves, Shabazz Reeves, Simone Sampson and Danielle Robinson will all join the Lady Bears as freshmen for the 2012-13 campaign. Montgomery, Jackson, Jones, Summer Reeves and Shabazz Reeves signed during the early period in the fall, while Sampson and Robinson signed during the most recent signing period.
A 6-foot-2 center, Montgomery was a four-year player for T.F. North High School in Chicago, Ill., earning first-team all-conference honors, while averaging 11.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game on a team that finished 20-8. Montgomery, who likes having a chance to make her mark as a freshman, was an inside force for her club team of Illinois X-Citement. Her club team coach, Xavier Walton said, “she has really worked at getting better.” “Sabrina [Montgomery] is a physical post who enjoys contact and can be a very dominate rebounding force," said Morgan State recruiting coordinator Chris Lewis. "She has the ability to force double teams in the low block and help initiate transition baskets with her defensive rebounding. She will be a great addition for us in the post."
Jackson is a post player that stands 6-foot-1 and was the leading scorer for the Maryland 3A State runner ups – River Hill High in Columbia Md. Jackson averaged a team-high 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 block shots during the state tournament. She was able to lead her team to the championship game in her only season at River Hill after being a standout performer at Howard High School the year before. "Alauna Jackson is a forward who excels in the half court, because of her high basketball IQ and overall skill set," Lewis said. "She has the ability to pass and shoot from the high post as well as finish around the rim using a variety of low post moves while using either hand. She will add more depth at the forward spot with her ability to play both post spots."
Jones is a 6-foot-1” forward who played at Broadneck High School in Annapolis, Md. According to her former club team coach and Morgan State alum, Donchez Graham of Team Maryland Shooting Stars, "Dinah is an ultra-athletic, fierce rebounder with a very smooth jump shot.” Added Graham,“she worked very hard to improve her ball handling and 3-point shooting this spring and it really showed during the evaluation period. Her best basketball is ahead of her.”
Jones was selected first-team All-Anne Arundel County in 2012 and honorable mention as a junior for Broadneck, was team MVP her senior season and was defensive MVP as a junior after averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. Jones was also an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society and will join the Lady Bears' volleyball team in the fall. Summer and Shabazz Reeves, are 5-foot-6 combo guards from Lakota West High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Summer and Shabazz averaged 9.6 and 4.2 points per game respectively in 2010-11. Summer added 5.2 rebounds and Shabazz 1.6 steals per contest. The girls chose MSU over the likes of New Hampshire, Richmond and Saint Francis (Pa.). Shabazz also considered playing soccer at the University of Cincinnati and Summer considered playing basketball at American.
“I chose MSU because I felt most comfortable with the coaching staff and (they) also assured me that my education would come first," said Shabazz. Summer agreed and is excited to continue playing with her sister. “At MSU I can get a great education and most importantly the coaches make me feel very comfortable,” said Summer. “I am happy Shabazz and I both get to experience this wonderful adventure together. Go Lady Bears!”
"The twins are flat out athletic,” said Lewis. “They both are almost un-guardable in transition with their combination of speed, quickness and ball handling ability. They both have the ability to play both the point guard and shooting guard positions. They will give us a boost in the scoring department, but more importantly they will defend on the perimeter relentlessly. We look forward to them having great success at the college level."
Sampson is a 6-foot-1 forward that played for national power, Riverdale Baptist in Maryland. Sampson is rated a two-star prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz. She originally played for Northwestern High School averaging 12.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game as a sophomore and first-team Gazette Newspapers All-Prince George's County girls' basketball team. “The first thing that stands out with Simone is the fact she was so well coached in high school and had an opportunity to compete against some of the country's best forwards on a day to day basis," Lewis said. "She is a talented young lady that will bring a sense of stability to our program's post core. Simone is a very skilled athlete and is also a young woman of great character. She will be a huge addition to Morgan State on and off the court." Danielle Robinson is a 5-foot-8 shooting guard from Potomac High School located in Virginia and the Nike Elite Team Fairfax Stars. Robinson is a 3-star rated prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz and ranked 31 in the country at her position. She averaged 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.5 steals for a team that finished 25-3 and ranked 9th in the State of Virginia and won a regional championship. "We are thrilled that Danielle is going to be a Lady Bear,” said Lewis. “She is a natural scorer who excels on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball. She will provide an immediate impact with her take and make high-percentage shots."
