it's time for eaves to go... This is crazy. You literally have dozens on post on this board supporting the guy. You guys really look silly. I was saying the same thing when times were good. If you're gonna be a fan, don't be fairweather. no one's being a fairweather fan and i'm not calling for his firing. i think its time for him to go, but i'm not advocating his firing. i think he deserves to finish the season but he should only be retained after the season ends if he turned the team around, won some tournament games, and/or his contract has more than 1 year remaining. no one, including me, has ever said eaves should stay "unconditionally". i've "repeatedly" predicated my support for eaves based on continued progress. so don't try to paint a picture that doesn't exist. so far this year, he's digressing instead of making progress. this season, for the first time since he's been here, he pulled a complete 180 regarding his offensive philosophy! he's never had his team jack up 3's the way they are now and no one could have predicted that. he changed, his results changed, and my support changed. just because a person supported the coach doesn't mean they're "locked in" to that support unconditionally. i stated at the beginning of the season before a single game was played that i didn't agree with eaves' philosophy regarding excessive 3's. but i also stated that i'd give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves me wrong. well, he didn't prove me wrong and the team has nose dived. last year i stated that he deserved another year as long as he continued to make progress and win some tournament games. does that sound unconditional? well, as of today, he's not continuing to make progress. he's headed in the opposite direction primarily because of his new founded philosophy on 3's. he pull's a 180 and we're suppose to continue to support him? i haven't read one single post (including mind) that supports his philosophy on 3's. and because of it's utter failure, everything else that's negative gets amplified. sorry, ain't nobody being a fairweather fan. no one is "unconditionally" locked in on their support for a coach. as with all aggie coaches, i even gave fobbs my strong support until i reached a tipping point. that's not being a fairweather fan, its quite the opposite. a fairweather fan would've turned on fobbs long before i did, and would have turned on eaves a long time ago every time we played in the meac tournament. i've stuck with eaves despite his poor tournament performances, my own criticism, and yours too. but my support is not "unconditional" for any aggie coach and i've never stated that it was. so i don't want to hear that fairweather crap. a fairweather fan would've jumped off the bandwagon a long time ago. if you choose to criticize the coach no matter what, then that's on you. but i choose to criticize the coach when he pulls an "uncharacteristic" 180 and the wins nose dive as a result...

Last nite was my first game of the season...I had been hearing a lot about this team underachieveing...
1)First of all, this team is not as good as last year's team...I can't speak for the rest of the conf, but that's a fact...How can you expect to have a better record than last year when this year's team is not as good?
2) Our two guards cant handle the ball..both of them just want to shoot spot up threes...
3) Our bigs don't play big, and cannot score in the post...
4) Our backup point guard is too small(who's gonna take Tavarus place next year?)
5) We dont have anyone other than Tavarus who can create his own shot..
Now the question is, how much of this is Eaves fault? Every mid major team that I have seen that is good, has 2-3 good guards...How many do we have?

Aggie 82,
Point 5 is very true and I had not considered. But you are correct the only person that can take someone off the dribble is Alston. Maybe Johnson a little bit. Hill does not have the size or hops to finish plus he is not a guy to knock down a jumper with a hand in his face.
I will say this: Recruting a 6 foot guard that can handle the ball and take people off the dribble is usually fairly easly. Who would have thought a mid-major or hbcu would have good size but only one guy on the team that could create his on shot.
Man back in the day when I was at T; Ice would broke that press by himself he would waived the other guys down the court. Walter Johnson (T) even said on the broadcast former Aggie guard - Bobby Moore was sitting courtside shaken his head at our inibility to break the press.

i've only seen the men play twice this year, against nsu and wssu. our weaknesses weren't as obvious against nsu since we had a decent shooting day.
but last night, i was literally "floored" at how poorly our guards handle the basketball! i was also shocked at how "slow" our guards are...

If eaves contract is in fact up at the end of the season and its renewed, i'll be stunned. he does not have a resume to support retaining him and theres would be no buyout. there are a ton of DII and DIII coaches that would take his money and give much better results. it was stated last year that we could not afford to fire eaves with all the issues with football and AD severence packages. well thats no longer an issue. With the talent on the floor we could get a new coach and a couple of transfer guards and make immediate noise next year.

this is a fun thread... what the folks in dowdy need to do is tell people the truth... if i was in dowdy i would not be afraid to tell people the truth........ 1) eaves makes the university a lot of money... & we don't put not one dime back into the mens program... (we will build a press box with it though)... 2) eaves was 100k under budget last yr... & he still had money to send his players to both sessions of summer school... but we couldn't let him do that... we only allowed his kids to go to 1 session... 3) oh yea... & how did we reward eaves for being 100k under budget... ... by not putting 1 dime back into the mens program... but i thought you "firing squad" guys knew that... 4) eaves budget is for 9th place... hes been finishing in the top 5... but he is budgeted for 9th... 5) we can't hire him another assistant... hail... eaves took less salary so he could get the assistants he has now more money... his assistants haven't had a raise in 7 yrs... 6) if we are not putting any of the money eaves brings in back into his program why fire him & bring another coach into the same situation... we're not changing the situation... we're just changing the coach... if you can't change the situation its just like a dog chasing after its own tail...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7) we don't lose money on mens bball... in fact we are making more money than we ever have... 8) &... unless you are financing the athletic department like T-BOONE PICKENS or PHIL KNIGHT... DON'T TELL ME TO FIRE A DAM SOUL...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 9) aren't you the same folks who ruined football with "fire small"... ??... just wondering...

Truthseeker,
What if I told you I agree with 100% of your post above.
That still has nothing to do with a strategy of shooting 40 three pointers in a game and when it does not work it takes 3/4 of the season to go back and play fundemental basketball.

Truthseeker keeps saying Eaves has the #9 budget in the MEAC but has NEVER produced any documented evidence to back up this claim.

You are RIGHT !! ON TARGET!! Is it REASONABLE to ASSUME that even if- EAVES had $100K more in his budget that he would still ...RECRUIT-just as ineffectively;DEVELOPE big men- just as ineffectively (i.e. to be NO BETTER as seniors, than they were as SOPH.);and have an "offense" built around shooting (20) 3's MAKING 15%-22% of them, resulting in NO inside game(e.g. essentially no HI-LO action stuff,NO pick&roll action stuff, etc.) He has TIME & BUDGET to have been and BE better-a CHANGE is a MUST!!!

Sorry, change is now close to an impossibility.
It's interesting that this whole particular forum (the Firing Squad) was started because we had a coach that failed to win a game in two years. If that dude wasn't fired until most of the way through year three (when he only won two games), there's simply no way Eaves was gonna get tossed. At least he bothers to win every now and then.
Let's look at it objectively. The fans have almost zero power to hire and fire anybody at this school. The most popular sport (and one of the only two moneymaking sports) was coached by a man that had no business whatsoever being hired, and lost to every last team on his schedule two years straight, all while bringing in more money than any coach in school history.
We had to wait until the school was ready before he was fired. The school ain't ready to fire Eaves. They see something behind all his miscalculations.

Forget it. 2 in a row this late in the season just saved him. As far as A&T standards go anyway. Jerry Eaves will be here. Only thing we can hope for is he gets/develops a decent enough big man that he cant deny giving the rock to.
