Four Players No Longer with UNC FB Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Hawatha Bell, Rashad Mason, Jamal Womble and Randy White are no longer part of North Carolina’s football team, a UNC official confirmed Monday morning.

Bell, a sophomore linebacker from Charlotte, was dismissed from the team for violating team rules. Bell was also sent home from the Meineke Car Care Bowl after, sources say, significantly breaking curfew.

As a freshman this past season, Bell saw limited action but did not accumulate any statistics. His UNC enrollment was delayed a semester after being involved in an altercation during his senior year of high school.

FYI AT HU...... HAMPTON, Va. – NuKeese Richardson, a student at the University of Tennessee, will enroll at Hampton University for the second semester of the 2009-10 academic year. Richardson spent one semester at Tennessee, playing for the Volunteers football team.

While a student at Tennessee, Richardson got involved in the court system in what he and the prosecution called a stupid prank with a pellet gun and was placed on pre-trial diversion, along with probation for three years for attempted robbery. If he stays out of trouble, the charge will be dismissed and his record will be wiped clean. Knox County Criminal Court Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz placed Richardson on pre-trail diversion and three years probation as part of a plea agreement. Pre-trial diversion is a statute in Tennessee which allows someone to complete a probationary term; if all requirements of the probation are satisfied, the judge will expunge these charges off the record forever.

Judicial diversion allows you to honestly answer on all applications (after successful completion of probation) that you have never pled guilty to a crime.

As a high school student, Richardson was rated No. 68 overall and the No. 9 wide receiver nationally. He was selected to play in the Under Armour All-American Game and named Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100. He attended Pahokee High School in Pahokee, Fla., where he earned all-area honors and was selected First Team Palm Beach Post All-Purpose Player.

Hampton head football coach Donovan Rose, who visited Richardson’s family, talked with former coaches, teachers, religious leaders and other members of his hometown community, believes Richardson is worthy of a second chance.

“NuKeese is a respectful and humble young man,” Rose said. “I am confident he will contribute excellence on and off the football field. He is extremely remorseful for his poor judgment in action and looks forward to coming to Hampton for a second chance.”

Director of Athletics Lonza Hardy Jr. added, “Hampton has a history of helping people who need a second chance. Hampton is a place where NuKeese will have the opportunity to mature as a young man, continue as a good student and showcase his talent as a great athlete.”

Richardson will be assigned a mentor to assist him with his transition from Tennessee to Hampton.

He would never have been accepted here at A&T with the "Hackley Rule" in place. I beleive Lee can be successful without bringing in criminals. The more I think about it the so-called "Hackley Rule" might be a good thing.
Do you think that Hampton would be known for giving students a second chance if they were not football players???

If he has done his homework about the situation like it SEEMS he has then I see nothing wrong with giving someone a 2nd chance. Especially if it was just youthful dumbness gone wrong and no one was hurt. The "Hackley Rule" goes against what most HBCUs stand for.

It should be coaches and AD decision based on research. If they get it wrong too many times because they just want a "division I stud" then you take that power away from them or give em the ax.

No transfers wishing to enroll at A&T can have any kind of criminal court conviction (even minor misdemeanors, the most common among college students) or any kind of pending case of any sort.

I think this is closer to the language. Has any somebody actually seen this policy?

"If an athlete transfers to A&T from another program "under any kind of behavioral or legal cloud," the chancellor, with input from the athletics director, has the final word on when or if that athlete can play."

I don't think it prevents any person from enrolling at A&T, therefore in my mind, doesn't conflict with what most HBCUs stand for.

But, this is what I'm really wondering about?

At who's expense is getting it wrong on, and how many times is too many? Without oversight, there is no oversight. This ensures that proper due diligence is performed.

Sounds like the guys from UNC didn't break any laws, just team rules. I guess that would be up to Lee to decide if he'd want these players.

i disagree with that, aggie monster. i think each prospective student, whether athlete or not, should be admitted based on their own merits and the entrance requirements of a&t. athletes shouldn't be given preferred treatment. anyone who has been charged with arm robbery would be a "known" risk to the general student body. though its probably unlikely, if this young man harms a fellow student as a result of his behavior, what admin would accept responsibility for that?

I agree! It should be up to the head coach and the AD. Those are the two who would have to suffer if the they make the wrong decision.
A&t has missed out on a lot of good players because of the Lloyd "The Hitman" Hackley rule.

I think General Lee has proven he can recruit good players with clear records. The question here is should he be forced to turn away a few good players who might not be choir boys.

Are we the only school that can't give kids a second chance?

born5, are you serious? no offense, but are you thinking more about the football team than the university and its students? you can't give the coach and the ad the green light to admit whoever they see fit. their judgment would be skewed by the incentive to win football games.

i want to win as much as anybody. but i do not think it's a wise idea to give the coach and the ad the authority to admit athletes based on their own discretion. not saying i'm for or against the hackley rule, but clearly the coach and ad shouldn't be the deciding factor when it comes to admitting transfers to a&t.

as long as our entrance requirements are fair and they reenforce what a&t as a university stands for academically and morally, we shouldn't make special exceptions for athletes no matter how talented they are. we have a responsibility to do what's in the best interest of a&t and its students. and admitting a known potential felon is not in the best interests of a&t or its students.

i'd rather send the kid off to a junior college for a year and if he gets his act together, then "consider" admitting him. cause if he were admitted outright and wound up harming another student, who's gonna accept responsibility for that? it ain't like you can say you didn't know he had a criminal past. whoever is responsible for admitting him would have to live on pins and needles until he graduates or leaves the university...

I don't believe that's the case. I believe we missed out on a few players because of academic standards, but not due to the so called Hackley Rule.

I think that most posters feel that these 2nd chance athletes shouldn’t be held to higher standard than the regular student population. I think because they are getting a 2nd chance (which in many cases is probably the 5th or 6th chance which is the due diligence component) should be held to a higher standard, simply because they want a second chance.
