Woes at the line costly for Rattlers... By St. Clair Murraine • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • January 10, 2010
Comments(0)Recommend Print this page E-mail this article Share Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine Buzz up!Twitter Just before starting her post-game meeting with the media, coach LeDawn Gibson was jokingly asked to sit in the psychiatrist's chair — an orange sofa in the interview room.
The FAMU women's basketball coach likewise responded, "I need one right now."
Gibson wasn't joking. She had just witnessed her team melt down at the free-throw line in a 79-72 loss to North Carolina A&T at the Lawson Center. The loss extended FAMU's skid against the Aggies to four straight and left the Rattlers with a 1-1 mark in the MEAC and 8-4 overall.
N.C. A&T, the defending conference champions, improved to 7-7 and 2-0 in the league after extending its streak over FAMU that dates back to 2007.
This one might have been different had it not been for the misses at the line, where FAMU was 3 of 11 in the second half and 5 of 13 for the game. Ball control also plagued FAMU as it committed 29 turnovers on which N.C. A&T got 29 points.
"I think we beat ourselves tonight; turnovers, missed free throws and we stopped playing together at the eight-minute mark," Gibson said. "Down the stretch, that hurt us."
Through the first 15 minutes of the second half, FAMU hit just 2 of 8 from the line, and during the spell they were in the funk, N.C. A&T refused to yield more than a five-point lead.
N.C. A&T got double-digit scoring from four players, led by JaQuayla Berry 16 points. FAMU was led by Qiana Donald and Christian Rateree with 19 points each. Donald also had 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
FAMU connected on 30 of 59 field-goal attempts for 50.8 percent shooter. N.C. A&T was 24 of 62 from the field, but its six 3-pointers were the glaring difference.
Berry was the most accurate from 3-point range, hitting 3-of-4 attempts. Her 3-pointer with 5:29 left in the game tied it at 60-60. Berry scored the next three points for N.C. A&T for a 63-60 lead it never relinquished.
Whatever chance FAMU had of making a dent slipped away at the line. It made four consecutive trips and hit only two. Donald was at the line twice and missed every opportunity to get the lead back for FAMU.
"It was frustrating that I couldn't knock it down, but I couldn't worry about it," she said. "I had to keep playing. I felt that it would eventually fall, but I was probably concentrating on it too much; trying to do everything. Calming down might have solved the whole problem."
By the time FAMU's woes began, N.C. A&T had figured out the 2-3 zone the Rattlers used to front the post in the first half. They fired up the 3-point attempt six times and missed only once.
N.C. A&T hit four straight 3-pointers to force the game's second tie at 29-29 with 6:09 left to play in the half. It stayed close until the 2:45 mark when Nikia Gorham's layup put N.C. A&T on top for the first time, 33-32. N.C. A&T got another Gorham layup, two foul shots by Amber Calvin and a three-point play by TaWuana Cook for a 40-32 lead at the half.

I attended the game and was proud of both team and staff performance. They handled FAMU's runs w/ character. Even with a lot of terrible calls, they maintained their composure. They never got upset or frustrated. Bibbs provided great direction. The few Aggies in attendance were loud! A quality win.

Glad to see that Alford and Waddell were back for this game.
If we finally get everyone healthy we are going to be hard to stop.

When we get a long break off the road, we will be hard to beat. IMO, the schedule has been brutal up to this point. For example, what doesn't show in the box score is the number of shots missed w/n 5 ft of the goal. We got position and rebounds, but couldn't get the ball above the goal to drop in. Many points were left on the floor.
The #1 take away I have from this game is that this team truly has the heart of a champion! FAMU was ready and the fresher team. Our ladies just refused to lose.

yeah, and the more i look at this team, the more i like the freshmen! all 3 of them! i don't need to say anything at all about amber calvin. she came to aggieland with lofty expectations and baby girl has not disappointed. she has lived up to the hype and then some! but jayla berry? you wanna see the next coming of btj? then just keep an eye on jayla berry! when she's on, she can flat out light it up!
at the beginning of the season, i was concerned that next year after tweet graduates, we wouldn't have the kind of "potent" scoring that we've seen with ab, btj, and tweet. but i don't have concerns anymore! both calvin and berry have proven "as freshmen" that they won't miss a beat after the big 3 have all graduated. and gorham is a better player than deblanc was at this time last year. hopefully, deblanc will get back to full strength but if she's not ready by next season, by then we'll have the 6'4" transfer ready to go!
oh, yeah! the beatdowns will continue next year...

Berry is just a cold-blooded scorer, plain and simple. She has confidence and athleticism.
Can't wait to see how she progresses throughout her career here.
