i watched the famu women play at kentucky this weekend and was curious as to how talented they are since they beat south florida (last season's wnit champs) and univ. of florida lady gators this season. not sure what the final score was because i only watched about 3 quarters of the game. but kentucky had a 25 point lead when i switched to watch the redskins.
kentucky played without their best player who suffered a concussion in practice the day before the game, so she sat out the entire game. the game started out pretty close, but kentucky gradually wore famu down and pulled away. against kentucky, famu only went about 6 players deep before there was a pretty big drop off in talent.
i took a close look at famu's players in order to try to assess how beatdowns unlimited would fare against them. since famu beat both south florida and florida, i expected to see a very talented famu team, or a tall team, or a combination of both. now i'll have to go back for a second look, but my overall "first impression" of them is that they are not earth shatteringly talented.
i didn't see anyone on their team that beatdowns unlimited doesn't have an answer for (assuming everyone is healthy). but they are "athletic" and they do have some pretty good ball players. they have "average size" for an meac team. their tallest player is a 6'4" freshman, but she never got off the bench. don't know if she's injured or if she's simply a project. but no one else in their top 8 rotation is taller than about 6'1" based on their online roster.
so i wouldn't characterize them as very tall but i would characterize them as very long. meaning they have several young ladies who stand about 6' to 6'1" tall with slim body frames and long arms that run the floor extremely well. i didn't see a "dominant" btj/ab type player on their team, but kentucky played hard against them because of the two famu upsets, so kentucky may have had a lot to do with that.
i think for beatdowns unlimited to be successful against them, we'll need deblanc healthy because famu's bigs are very long and athletic. but with deblanc and gorham in the lineup, we can contain them. their guards are pretty good, but they don't have anyone the caliber of tweet in their back court. however, they are aggressive and they aren't intimidated by taller players. they drove inside against kentucky's bigs without any fear.
quite honestly, i really don't know how they managed to beat south florida and florida unless those teams took famu lightly. but then again, i've only seen famu play once. so my assessment is very premature. i thought i would see at least one standout dominant player on their team, but i didn't. of course, my assessment is very "premature" but based on what i saw this weekend, i definitely don't see famu beating us in the dawg pound. but who knows what can happen on the road in tally. i suspect that bibbs will have our girls ready because clearly famu will be looking to ambush the lady aggies in tally! i'm told it'll be famu's first conference game in their new facility, so i'm sure they'll be fired up...
