Haywood and Baker-Brice Lead Tigers Past North Carolina A&T Courtesy: Athletic Media Relations Release: 11/21/2009
TOWSON, Md. - Jessica Haywood scored a career-high 18 points to help lead the Tigers past North Carolina A&T 74-69 on Saturday night in Preseason WNIT consolation bracket play. Shanae Baker-Brice added 21 points as the Tigers (2-1) won their second straight contest.
"I was happy with the pace of play tonight," said Coach Joe Mathews. "I thought we continued to improve on some of the things we needed to work on and Jess really came through with a strong performance inside."
The Tigers struggled with turnovers early in the contest as North Carolina A&T built a quick 12-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Omara Parker got the Tigers on the board at 17:52 as she hit one of two from the foul line. That free throw started an 8-0 run that made it a 12-8 game with 13:30 to play in the half. Kandace Davis had five points during that stretch. The Aggies extended their lead to 16-10 with 12:11 to play in the half. Towson went on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the contest 20-18, with 9:39 to play. The Tigers closed the half on a 19-12 run to take a 39-30 lead into halftime. Haywood had 11 points in six minutes of action in the first half.
The Aggies opened the second half on an 8-1 run to make it a 40-37 game with 18:06 to play. The Tigers pushed the lead to 44-37 on back-to-back buckets before North Carolina A&T launched an 11-0 run to take back the lead. Ta'Wuana Cook scored nine of the 11 during that stretch to give her team a 48-44 advantage with 12:48 to play. The two teams would trade baskets over the next few minutes before a Baker-Brice jumper at 9:27, gave Towson back the lead for good. A three-pointer by Charmonique Watt at 7:37 made it a 59-51 game in favor of the home team. Towson would score 15 of the final 33 points to claim the 74-69 victory.
In addition to her 18 points, Haywood would contribute six rebounds. Baker-Brice posted her third straight 20+ point performance of the season. She also added four rebounds and five assists. Watt finished with nine points and three assists while Davis led the Tigers on the boards with seven.
Cook posted a game-high 25 points, four assists and three steals. Lamona Smalley contributed 15 points and eight boards off the bench.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, November 24 when they host local rival, UMBC at 7 p.m.

I think they are playing hack-a-Mona right now. She has missed abut 20 free throws. a&t 61, tu 68 1:50 LEFT That was Sams. She was 1-7 from the field (mostly layups) and missed seven free throws. If Sams and Murdaugh can play up to expectations, this team will be fine. My projection was that we would win two of these three games and we should have by all accounts. Going into next weekend, one of those two has to step up to be successful. If they do, we can sweep the weekend. If not, we come out with a split.

My bad. I had a hard time making out some of our players on the webcast.
Jaleesa is normally a decent free throw shooter so she must have just had an off night. She'll bounce back.

www.ncataggies.com/Womensbasketball/2009-10%20ARTICLES/3AGGIESvtowson.htmTOWSON, Md. – The mission of trying to find your identity as a team is never easy. It’s even harder when having to face some of the best women’s basketball programs in the nation. North Carolina A&T closed out the WNIT with a 74-69 loss to Towson Saturday night at the Towson Center. Despite losing two of the three games in the prestigious tournament, the Aggies are not alarmed. They were competitive in all three games, and in two of the three games, they were playing on the opposing teams home floor. The early concerns are free throw shooting in the clutch and finding a rhythm offensively. Ta’Wuana Cook led the Aggies with 25 points and four assists. She is now four assists shy of becoming the Aggies all-time leader in assists. Lamona Smalley had 15 points and eight rebounds. “This was a winnable game,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “But we didn’t knock down those crucial foul shots. I think we are still trying to find our way. We’re still looking for the right rotations that work for us. But seeing this type of competition early is only going to help us.” The WNIT included 11 teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The Tigers returned four starters from a team that went 17-13 last season. Despite that, the Aggies jumped out to an early 12-0 lead before the Tigers adjusted to their pressure and ran out to a 39-30 halftime lead. Behind the play of Cook, the Aggies climbed back into the game. A 3-point play and a 3-point basket by Cook ignited an 11-0 run to give the Aggies a 48-44 with 12:48 to play. The Aggies would go a little more than five minutes without a field goal, allowing the Tigers to take a 59-53 lead. The Tigers lead would grow to as many as nine before the Aggies made a late push. Two Smalley free throws cut the lead to four at 68-64 with a little more than a minute remaining. Jessica Haywood answered with a layup on the other end to give the Tigers a 70-64 lead with 56 seconds remaining. Jaleesa Sams would find Smalley for a layup on the next possession to cut Towson’s lead back to four. But 30 seconds later, Charmonique Watt put the game away with a 3-pointer that gave the Tigers a 73-66 lead with 19 seconds remaining. Things may have been different for the Aggies down the stretch, but they went 8-for-15 from the free throw line over the final 10 minutes of the game. “Road games are tough, but they allow us to grow,’’ said Bibbs. “But we had enough free throws tonight to win the ball game. When it is all said and done, I believe we will be one of the best free throw shooting teams in our conference.” The Aggies (1-2) will play in the New Mexico Tournament starting on Friday.
