www.goblueraiders.com/content.cfm/id/42552November 23, 2009 Blue Raiders fall to Aggies
MT Athletic CommunicationsGREENSBORO, N.C. - Middle Tennessee had 21 turnovers and shot just 30.4 percent from the field in a 65-56 loss to North Carolina A&T on Monday night. The Blue Raiders (2-3) trailed by three at the half and used an 11-0 run in the second to put it within one-point after losing by eight but could not put everything together at one time to pick-up the win. "We got every look but couldn't make any. We had open looks, shots that bounced off the rim and couldn't make cheap baskets. There were a number of unforced turnovers and their press was ok and North Carolina A&T played pretty well," head coach Kermit Davis said. Junior James Washington led the team with 17 points as he was 5 for 11 from the field while freshman J.T. Sulton and junior Trevor Ottley grabbed eight and six rebounds respectively on defense. Freshman James Gallman was the only other player in double-figures with 11. "Montarrio Haddock's energy level was down and anytime your leading scorer and rebounder doesn't help it is hard to win," Davis said. "We started Williams tonight because he has been aggressive under the basket but he didn't respond so we brought in John David Little and his effort was fine. We tried playing everyone; Trevor and James Washington battled tonight." As a team, Middle Tennessee went 17 for 56 from the field and 7 for 25 from the three-point line while NCAT (3-2) shot 40.7 percent and was 12 for 33 from behind the arc. Defensively, the Blue Raiders had 45 total rebounds with 15 of those coming on offense while the Aggies had 32 rebounds with just five on the offensive side of the ball. Middle Tennessee did perform well at the charity stripe making 15 of its 21 attempts for a 71.4 percent, marking the fourth time it has shot 70 percent or better from the line. At the first media timeout, the two teams were tied at four with a number of turnovers and missed opportunities between them. The Blue Raiders called a timeout after the Aggies scored six unanswered to pull ahead 10-7 and then called another one after NCAT hit two more three-pointers taking a 16-8 lead. Middle Tennessee closed the gap but could not take control as NCAT took a three-point lead at the half, 27-24. Middle Tennessee shot just 29.6 percent from the field while the Aggies were 33.3 percent from the field. Washington led the team at the half with seven points while senior Calvin O'Neil and freshman John David Little added three each. The Aggies hit just one two-point field goal in the first half making seven three-pointers. Alston led the team with 12 points after going 4 for 6 from behind the arc. NCAT was 7 for 16 from behind the arc shooting 43.8 percent. NCAT used its momentum from the first half to begin the second half as it outscored the Blue Raiders 16-8 taking a 44-32 lead at the 12-minute media timeout. Middle Tennessee then mounted a comeback and after three three-pointers and an 11-0 run were within one point, 36-35. The Blue Raiders battled but a long scoring drought and multiple turnovers stalled the comeback and put them back down 55-49. Middle Tennessee did not have a field goal from the 6:32 minute mark to the 1:17 and had just two free throws during that time. The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 27 when they play host to Cumberland University at 7 p.m. in the Murphy Center.

I saw the game. The team looked better. T Alston was moved to the no. 2,( at times) and got some open looks. We never hit 5th gear and the MTS team hung around, hit a few 3's and got it back close. They sprung a half-court trap that exposed us. Add to that, some missed FT's and a few rushed shots, and they pulled within 1 or 2 of us.
Why we won: >We were too deep. >They got worn down by our press. >We went inside a little more. >We had a few fast breaks with Coleman dunks. ========== We could: >Shoot better >Protect the ball better. >Shoot our FT's at a better %. ========= Who I liked: Rob hit some big shots. D.Joshua turned over the ball while trying to make an inbound play about 3 times. But he showed that Reggie miller draw a foul, frustrate you type of game. He can get his own shot. ( a lot of people dont really like what he does at times...I know...a lot of moans) But He will take his man...he looks to do it as opposed to finding oneself on a 1-on-1 and looking around while everyone says 'take him'...'shoot it'. A Witter has a nice stroke, he hit about 3 3's from the same corner. ========= What I liked: > Our defense ( Porter hustled back to alter a crucial shot) We had about 5 or 6 blocks) The league may have to take notice. There were hardly any gimmies. > Our press > Our poise ( we listened to the coach and put a few things together) > Our inside game is getting better. The balance is happening. ========== This was a good game. If we continue to shoot better we could make some noise. This also showed me that they got coached up. I dont think that we made as many TO's as before & we caused quite a few. Lastly we did not get 'tight' when we were loosing the lead but we need to turn on the inside 'and -1' ( Jason Wills) type game during crunch time.
Good Win Aggies.

Aggies enjoy win before road trip Tuesday, November 24, 2009 (Updated 8:24 am) By Jeff Mills Staff WriterGREENSBORO — N.C. A&T freshman Austin Witter didn't have much time to enjoy his key performance in the Aggies' 65-56 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Monday night. Witter and his teammates had a bus to catch. At 4:30 a.m. Dwane Johnson finished with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench, and Witter scored eight of his 11 during a critical stretch of the second half as the Aggies (3-2) beat Middle Tennessee (2-3) in a tuneup for A&T's toughest non-conference stretch of the season. Senior point guard Tavarus Alston shot 4-for-8 from 3-point range and scored 14 points, and Robert Johnson scored all seven of his points in a game-sealing run. A few hours after the game, A&T caught a bus to the Raleigh airport. The Aggies will play three games at three sites in four days more than 1,500 miles away from the cozy Corbett Center. A&T plays Wednesday at Texas-El Paso, then Thanksgiving day at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., then heads back to Beaumont, Texas, for a game Saturday at Lamar. When it's over, the Aggies will cover more than 3,300 miles by planes and buses. Read more: www.news-record.com/content/2009/11/24/article/aggies_enjoy_win_before_road_trip

www.ncataggies.com/Mensbasketball/2009-10%20ARTICLES/5AGGIESvMTSU.htmAGGIES WIN AT HOME AGAINST MTSUGREENSBORO – Senior Robert Johnson had the worst shooting night of his career. But because he followed instructions, he ended up with the biggest shots of the game as the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball team defeated Middle Tennessee State 65-56 Monday night at Corbett Sports Center. Senior Dwane Joshua came off the bench to lead the Aggies with 18 points and eight rebounds. Tavarus Alston added 14 points and four assists, and freshman Austin Witter scored 11 points in 11 minutes of action. Johnson, who is a career 49 percent shooter, finished the night with just seven points on 3-for-12 shooting. In fact, the Greensboro native didn’t have a point entering the 33rd minute of the game. It didn’t appear the Aggies would need Johnson’s scoring thanks to a tremendous shooting outburst from Witter. Witter hit back-to-back threes to give the Aggies a 39-32 lead six minutes into the second half. Sophomore Nic Simpson complemented Witter with a three of his own. Senior James Porter and Witter connected on a give-and-go as Witter rolled to the basket for a 44-32 Aggies advantage. “Witter is a tremendous shooter,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Jerry Eaves. “That’s what he did in high school, so seeing him hit shots is not a surprise to anyone on our team because everyone knows how well he shoots the ball. Tonight, he shot the ball without hesitation. Tonight, he shot it with confidence.” It didn’t take long for the Blue Raiders to get back into the game. A 13-2 run in a span of three minutes pulled the Blue Raiders to within one at 46-45 with 8:55 remaining. Two Joshua free throws moved the lead to three before MTSU’s James Gallman tried to tie the game with a 3-pointer. Simpson grabbed the miss and ignited Johnson’s offense by tossing a no-look pass to Johnson for a layup. J.T. Sulton moved the Blue Raiders to within three on a layup with 6:39 to play. Johnson then forced a Blue Raider turnover and was rewarded with a pass from Joshua on the break to give the Aggies a 52-47 with six minutes remaining. Johnson all but iced the 90 seconds later with his only 3-point field goal in seven tries on the night to give the Aggies a 55-47 lead. “He hit the big one,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Jerry Eaves. “We want our players to keep shooting the ball. We shot 33 3-pointers tonight and had some great looks. It just didn’t go in. But we want to take perimeter shots as fast as we can. Robert did what I want all my players to do. He didn’t let his confidence waver. He kept playing and made a big shot.” MTSU never recovered from Johnson’s 3-pointer. The Blue Raiders couldn’t get the lead under six the rest of the way as the Aggies improved to 3-2 on the season. The Aggies will spend their Thanksgiving Holiday traveling. They will play three games in four days at UTEP (Nov. 25), New Mexico State (Nov. 26) and Lamar (Nov. 28). The Blue Raiders (2-3) were led by James Washington’s 17 points.
