could they do a split association? something like what Temple (bball is in A-10, football is MAC) or Georgetown (bball is Big East, fball Patriot League) do? They could do Div 1 bball and Div 2 fball or is that not possible? Does it all have to be D1 (whether 1A or 1AA for fball purposes)? D1 is an all or nothing association. This is the reason that schools such as UNCG, UNCW & Charlotte (up until recently) stayed away from football. They have to start the program in D1 level (regardless of FBS or FCS). How is Davidson then able to not be D-1 in football?

They have to start the program in D1 level (regardless of FBS or FCS). How is Davidson then able to not be D-1 in football? Davidson does play D1 football. They are in the FCS level Pioneer League. It's a non-scholarship league that doesn't get an auto bid to the playoffs. www.pioneer-football.org/pfl/
