New A&T chancellor will have big to-do list Friday, May 22, 2009 By Joe Killian Staff WriterGREENSBORO — When the UNC Board of Governors meets today to announce N.C. A&T’s new chancellor, many Aggies may see it more as a “welcome home.” Harold Martin, an A&T alumnus and former chancellor of Winston Salem State University, is widely expected to take the position. Faculty and staff at A&T and UNC general administration said they could not discuss Martin Thursday, citing confidentiality concerns. But if he does become the school’s next leader, he’ll be taking the helm in one of the most challenging periods in its history. The new chancellor will face financial, academic and philosophical problems before students even return to campus in the fall. The state budget crisis has wreaked havoc at all the UNC campuses. Staff and faculty have been laid off as the schools cut their budgets by 7 percent. Even deeper cuts are expected next year, with some predicting as much as 10 to 15 percent. A&T already has more than 100 vacant teaching positions, more than any other school in the system. Adjunct professors have been let go and class offerings and availability are shrinking. Even before the budget crisis, A&T had faced academic troubles for years. In 2007, 25 percent of all students at the school were on academic probation. That number has improved in the past two years, but is still at 12 percent. The school’s popular football team was punished by the NCAA earlier this month for performing beneath minimum standards on its Academic Progress Rate report. This is the fourth consecutive year the team has failed to meet the minimum standard. As a penalty, the school will now be able to award fewer football scholarships. www.news-record.com/content/2009/05/22/article/martin_introduced_as_new_at_chancellorMartin introduced as new A&T chancellor Friday, May 22, 2009 Staff ReportsHarold Martin, an N.C. A&T alumnus and former chancellor of Winston Salem State University, was today named chancellor of A&T. The UNC Board of Governors met today on the A&T campus to approve the decision. UNC President Erskine Bowles made the announcement. Martin most recently worked as senior vice president for academic affairs for the UNC system. He will begin work at N.C. A&T on June 8. Bowles said N.C. A&T needed a leader who knew the university. "We didn't have to look very far," Bowles told the crowd. "There is not a doubt in my mind that Harold Martin is the right person to lead North Carolina A&T today and in the years to come. "Harold Martin is passionate. He is passionate about the larger role that A&T can play in the life of this city, this community..." "It is a great pleasure to come home," Martin said following a standing ovation as he was introduced. A&T Chancellor Stanley Battle announced his resignation in February, citing family and personal reasons.

I wonder why they didn't hold a major press conference so that alumni and local media outlets (i.e. BDV.com) could attend.

Oh, so they just didn't bother to tell me about it. Gotcha. LOL To answer your question. Probably . Or it could have been a minor oversight, in all of the excitement. You have got to strengthen your contacts. Make absolutely sure that they keep you on their hotline. People rely on news and information from this site. Hopefully, you were able to see it at 6:00. I've missed everthing today. Although I knew he was the choice long ago, I would have liked to have been in the audience at the press conference. Oh well maybe the next regime.

I don't know why they took us through this phony search process when they knew all the while that Martin was their pick back when Battle first resigned!! It worked out just fine though, because Martin is a very good pick. Good luck!!!!

Aggies say Martin is ideal for job as chancellor Wednesday, May 27, 2009 By Joe Killian Staff WriterGREENSBORO — When Harold Martin takes over as N.C. A&T’s new chancellor June 8, he’ll be on familiar ground. As an alum who’s also been a professor, dean and administrator at the university, there isn’t much he doesn’t know about it. That’s one of the reasons so many Aggies say he’s the best man for the job. “He knows this school and its programs from agriculture to engineering,” said Velma Speight-Buford, a 1953 alumna and member of the university board of trustees. “He had a real idea of the school’s potential, and so I think he’s going to have a great vision for where we’re going and how we get there.” Speight-Buford has a long history with Martin beginning in the late ’70s, when he was a rising star in the school’s engineering department. “Even back then he was thought of as a great leader who had a lot of passion,” she said. “Everyone was impressed by his brightness, his intelligence, and his drive.” Speight-Buford said that in those days the school had few, if any, black professors in the engineering department. “There just still weren’t that many minority schools that were training engineers in those days,” she said. “And there were many professors who felt that blacks weren’t as competent, that they shouldn’t be professors.” When Martin was turned down for an assistant professorship in 1979, Speight-Buford led a group to speak to Chancellor Lewis Dowdy on his behalf. Martin got the job and was chairman of the department of electrical engineering within five years. By 1989, he was the dean of the school’s college of engineering. “It’s not a secret that I thought Harold should have been chancellor in 1999, when they chose Jim Renick,” said Speight-Buford. “But even when that happened, it showed Harold’s character. You never heard him say anything negative about the school or the chancellor. He remained a supporter.” When Martin went on to become chancellor at Winston-Salem State University, many Aggies said he showed what he could have done for their school. Under his leadership from 2000-2006 the school both doubled its enrollment and raised academic standards, seeing freshman SAT scores go up by almost 70 points. He also oversaw the creation of successful projects such as the school’s nursing program, which UNC President Erskine Bowles calls the best in the state. “I can tell you there was a lot of talk that we should have gotten him in ’99,” said Stephen Douglas, a 1981 A&T alum. “A lot of the students, the staff, the alumni, we all felt like Winston had been smart enough to get him and they reaped all the rewards.” While WSSU began thriving, A&T entered a period of lowered academic standards and performance, overenrollment and financial mismanagement. Renick resigned in 2006. Several months later, state audits led to a criminal investigation into how he managed money at the university. No charges were ever brought, but many Aggies felt the school’s reputation suffered. Read more: www.news-record.com/content/2009/05/26/article/aggies_say_martin_is_ideal_for_job_as_chancellor
