The Fayetteville State football team has plugged two holes with Division I transfers.
Broncos recruiting coordinator David Bowser announced Thursday that former North Carolina linebacker Wesley Flagg and North Carolina State wide receiver Marcus Bond have signed with FSU. Both players are expected to compete for starting positions in the fall and be major contributors to an experienced squad that will lose only five starters from last year’s 8-2 team.
The additions bring this year’s recruiting class to 28 players, and Bowser said the Broncos will wait and see if other players contact them about transferring after Division I programs finish their spring sessions.
Flagg, a Jack Britt graduate, is 6-foot and 225 pounds. He played as a freshman and sophomore for the Tar Heels, securing a starting spot in his second season.
He was dismissed for violating team policies in May of 2008, and he spent the past year working to become eligible. His stats include 23 tackles – one for a loss – in 2007 and nine tackles as a freshman in 2006.
Phillips, who didn’t return calls seeking comment, has said the team is looking for someone to replace middle linebacker Terrel Allen. He recorded 71 tackles last year, second most on the team.
Bond’s addition addresses one of the offense’s biggest losses. Wide receiver Darryl Barnett caught 33 passes for a team-high 486 yards last year. He had 12 touchdowns, and his speed stretched opposing defenses.
Clocked at 4.3 seconds over 40 yards, Bond should give the offense another deep threat. The 5-10, 170-pound Hertford County graduate was more of a slot receiver for the Wolfpack. He left after not playing a down his freshman season in 2007, when Tom O’Brien took over the program from Chuck Amato.
He will join a speedy receiving corps, which includes returners such as Bobby Wilder (averaged 20.5 yards per catch last year) and Kendon Doe (14.6). The coaching staff also is excited about plugging him into the best kick returning unit in Division II last year. Running back Richard Medlin averaged 41.7 yards per return and scored three touchdowns.
