WALTER MEBANE'S STINT AS HU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH ENDS, DAVID SIX TAPPED TO REINVIGORATE ONCE DOMINANT PROGRAM

HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton University Director of Athletics Lonza Hardy Jr. announced on Tuesday that the contract of head women’s basketball coach Walter Mebane is not being renewed.
Mebane, who had worked at Hampton for 10 years, compiled a record of 70-77 in his five years as head coach of the Lady Pirates. Hardy said he elected to not renew Mebane’s contract past its March 31 expiration date in order to “move the program in a different direction.”
“I certainly want to thank Coach Mebane for his 10 years of service in working with our women’s basketball program,” said Hardy. “As the head coach of the Lady Pirates for the past five years, I know that he worked to try to maintain the program’s stature as a dominant mid-major power. Unfortunately, the program simply was not progressing at the rate that I wanted it to, so I made the tough decision to not renew Coach Mebane’s contract and to work to bring a new energy level to the program.”
During his stint as the Lady Pirates’ coach, Mebane’s best season came a year ago, when Hampton went 18-13 in 2007-08. His other teams finished at 7-22 in 2005-06, 15-13 in 2006-07 and 16-16 in 2008-09.
Hardy has moved swiftly in replacing Mebane. He said David Six, the former head women’s basketball coach at Hampton High School, will replace Mebane on an interim basis through the 2009-10 season. As a high school coach, Six captured two state and nine regional championships. He was also one of the region’s most successful AAU coaches.
“This is a tremendous opportunity at a great university and I’m looking forward to the challenge of coaching here,” said Six, who served as HU’s Director of Intramurals during the 2008-09 school year. “My initial priorities will be to raise our recruiting standards and to tap into the local recruiting market. I believe this area is one of the most talented-laden areas in the state.”
A press conference to officially present Six as Hampton’s new head women’s basketball coach is currently being planned.
