Georgia On Our Mind: Florida State Earns No. 3 Seed in NCAA Women's Tournament, Will Face North Carolina A&T Saturday at 2 p.m.
March 16, 2009
TALLAHASEE, Fla. - For a school-record fifth-straight season, the No. 12 Florida State women's basketball team is going dancing.
FSU (26-7) heard its name called on Selection Monday for the ninth time in program history as the team earned its highest seeding ever in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. As a No. 3 seed, the Seminoles will travel to Duluth, Ga. - which is just outside of Atlanta - to take on No. 14 seed North Carolina A&T Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m.
"Our fans are the best and we love going to Atlanta," FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. "The fact that it is not someone's home court is something we are extremely excited about."
Should the Seminoles defeat the Aggies (26-6), they would play the winner of the Arizona State vs. Georgia matchup. Saturday's first round showdown will be aired on ESPN2.
Florida State's best-ever seeding is a reward for the greatest regular-season in program history. The Seminoles not only earned their highest national rankings ever this season, for the first time they also earned a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference title by finishing tied with Maryland with 12 regular-season wins. In yet another program first, the team also finished undefeated in true road games this season.
FSU then followed the regular season with the team's second-ever trip to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.
In addition to all the overall team achievements this year, several individuals have earned their fair share of recognition.
Semrau earned her third-career ACC Coach of the Year honor this season after tying her season high with 24 victories before the season even started. She earned career victory No. 200 this year and her Seminoles also set a new school record for most wins over top-10 opponents with three.
As for her players, four different Seminoles earned all-conference honors as junior forward Jacinta Monroe led the way with two nods. Monroe, who became FSU's all-time leader in blocked shots this year, was named to the All-ACC Defensive and All-ACC Second teams.
Senior guards Mara Freshour and Tanae Davis-Cain were both named to the All-ACC Third Team. They both were also named to the ACC All-Tournament Team, marking the first time in Seminole history that two FSU players earned that type of recognition in the same season.
True freshman Cierra Bravard rounded out the awards with an All-ACC Rookie Team selection.
"It's just a testament to what we have done this season as a team that has worked so hard and so diligent," Semrau said. "I am just really excited that we have this opportunity to go play North Carolina A&T in the NCAA Tournament."
