AGGIES SIGN ONE OF STATE'S TOP ATHLETESS
The 26th player of the 2009 class signs
GREENSBORO, March 9, 2009 – North Carolina A&T football coach Alonzo Lee said on signing day that he was not finished adding players for the 2009 season. Lee has kept his promise. On Monday, he kept that promise in a big way by announcing the signing of one of the best players in the state in Larry Raper.
Raper (Shelby HS) is a 5-foot-11 athlete from Shelby, N.C. Raper has not only been consistently ranked as one of the top players in the state, but also as one of the best players in the country.
ESPN ranked Raper as the No. 52 athlete in America and the No. 15 player in North Carolina. He was also ranked 77th in the country by rivals.com. Raper was also awarded rivals and Scouts.com’s prestigious 3-Star Athlete Honor with the number of stars denoting how highly regarded a recruit is among college programs.
“The hard work is paying off,’’ said Lee. “Any time you can get a young man with more than 1,400 all-purpose yards in a season on your team, you make yourself a whole lot better. To land a recruit of this magnitude means so much to our program.”
Raper finished his career ranked No. 26 in the state. As a sophomore he rushed 71 times for 575 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 424 yards and five touchdowns. The following season he rushed for 722 yards on 103 carries and touchdowns. As a junior, he made 13 receptions for 316 yards and a touchdown.
Last season, he had 13 rushing touchdowns and scored five times as a receiver. Raper brings the 2009 total signee count to 26.
