www.news-record.com/content/2009/02/06/article/new_at_coach_lee_likes_first_recruitsNew A&T coach Lee likes first recruits Friday, February 6 ( updated 8:08 am) By Robert Bell Staff Writer GREENSBORO - Alonzo Lee seemed more relaxed Thursday than when he first took over three weeks ago as N.C. A&T's new football coach. Gone was the urgency and anxiousness to beat the bushes for bodies. Lee seemed more at ease - at times ecstatic - with the 22 players the Aggies signed on Wednesday, the first day high school and junior college players could sign national letters of intent. "It's a very deep, very talented class for us - even more so when you think about the time we had to get everything together," said Lee. Lee, who promised to tap into the Triad's football market when he was introduced last month, made good on that promise. He signed five players from Guilford County, including all-state players Ricky Lewis and Chris Neal from Dudley. Besides filling some obvious holes, Lee believes the Aggies sent a message to football players and coaches throughout Guilford County. "We want to be the first school that a young man from the Triad thinks about when he's ready to play college football," said Lee. "It's a great class for us, top to bottom. And with so many (local) players on our list, that makes it even better.'' In addition to Lewis, Dudley's standout quarterback, and Neal, the Panthers' top defensive lineman, A&T signed two other starters from Dudley's 3-A state championship team: defensive end Darius Hall and linebacker Tevin Williams. The Aggies also signed fullback Chris Kennedy out of Northwest Guilford. Lewis and Neal were already on Lee's radar before he accepted the A&T job last month. He was recruiting them for Morgan State, where he was the Bears' defensive coordinator until three weeks ago.
"I just told them we're turning the ship in a different direction," said Lee. "I told them ‘I'm the head coach in your back yard now. Let's get the job done close to home.' "Neal, who was also getting interest from Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech, met with Lee in December when Lee was trying to persuade him to sign with Morgan State."You could tell he was passionate about winning," said Neal. "It didn't matter whether it was A&T or Morgan."
Said Kennedy: You could see it in (Lee's) eyes. He wants to win, to turn the program around."That will take more than a good recruiting class. The Aggies' problems run deep. They lack a go-to runner and their defensive secondary is thin. Lee said he's hoping to bring in a few junior college or Division I transfers between now and August to help out at the linebacker position. Lee and his staff, assistants George Ragsdale and Tavis Oliver, focused on strengthening the interior line on both sides of the ball, but they also went after some skill-position players. Lee's excited about quarterback Lewis Kindle, who threw for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns for Westlake High School in Atlanta last season. Kindle has good speed and a quick release.
"He can run and throw," said Lee. "We talked to him about our offense, and he instantly knew what we were asking of him. Very smart young man."Lee's also high on Antoinnialrose "Tony" Coles, whom Lee found while coaching at Morgan State in Baltimore. Coles, a running back from West Hills (Md.) Community College, is the Aggies' lone junior college transfer so far.
"He's got that wiggle I like to see in a back," said Lee.Contact Robert Bell at 373-7055 or robert.bell@news-record.com

Lol! Now it all makes sense in waiting so long to hire Lee. Great way to stretch our recruiting budget by letting MSU pay part of the tab!

Lol! Now it all makes sense in waiting so long to hire Lee. Great way to stretch our recruiting budget by letting MSU pay part of the tab! yeah, while a lot of us were second guessing wheels during the long ordeal to name a coach, it turns out he had plan after all. obviously a lot of things were going on behind the scenes that we didn't know about. otherwise, how do we come up with such a quality recruiting class despite the fact that we named our coach only 3 weeks prior to signing day? so far, so good wheels!
