I AGREE THE BEST GAME EVER WAS PLAYED BETWEEN A&T AND NORFOLK STATE - 3 OVERTIMES - 134 -132 NORFOLK STATE. COACH CAL IRVIN, COACH CORBETT AND COACH BIG HOUSE GAINES ALWAYS WENT NORTH (PHILLY,NEW YORK, JERSEY AND D C ) TO RECRUIT PLAYERS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? EAVES ALWAYS GOES TO KENTUCKY ... IS THAT WHY HE IS A SUB PAR COACH? you're right. we use to always get players out of the new york area. if my memory serves me correctly, even bird was from new york. for some reason, we use to have an underground railroad to yonkers, new york...

( a heavier stick than we did was alcorn state. we're talkin' late 70's early 80's, alcorn had some "monster" teams. i think we may have loss a game or two to them, but not by much.)
Thanks for giving the Braves our props.. ....However ( and I could not find the score,) Alcorn beat A&T by 20 points or so in Greensboro in 1979 and Howard by 39 on the same swing that year .Alcorn v NCAT-SC ST-FAMU in 1981 there have been no games since then between the 2 teams 2 Sun, Dec 6, 1981 REG North Carolina A&T MEAC -7.90 W 86 78 1 1 W 1 3 Sat, Dec 12, 1981 REG South Carolina State MEAC -13.83 W 92 73 2 1 W 2 4 Sat, Dec 19, 1981 REG N Florida A&M MEAC -15.03 W 101 67 3 1 W 3 5 Tue, Dec 22, 1981 REG @ Illinois-Chicago IND -8.12 W 88 81 4 1 W 4

(they may have gone undefeated or close to it in one of those years. and my memory is a little fuzzy, but i also think they did ...) Lost in 2nd round of NIT to NIT winner Indiana 73-69 at IU. Alcorn St. went 27-0 in 1978-79 but was overshadowed by Indiana St.and overlooked by the NCAA

They are a trivia question buried beneath the press clippings of a basketball legend. Why should you care about the 1978-79 Alcorn State basketball team? For starters, it was undefeated in the regular season. Of course, the team doesn't expect you to know that, because that same year Indiana State and its prized forward, Larry Bird, also finished unblemished in the regular season.
Bird and his Sycamores captivated an adoring public with their attempt at running the table, making it all the way to the NCAA championship game before losing to Earvin Johnson and his Michigan State Spartans in an epic showdown that remains the most highly rated televised college basketball game in history.
Wondering who eliminated Alcorn State in the NCAA Tournament? Nobody. They weren't invited. Apparently a spotless 27-0 ledger wasn't good enough for the selection committee back in 1979, when the tournament field was only 32 teams.
