yes Slater is a proven winner but from his resume he spent 1 year outside of Alabama. If we want to see signifigant progress the first / second year it has to be someone who can recruit NC.
When you come in to a new job you rely on what you know and he knows Alabama, but i don't think too many recruits are going to come from Alabama to play for us.
Joe Taylor spent almost all of his time in Virginia; VA Union, one year at Howard and then at Hampton. He went to Florida this year and turned a 3-8 team into a 9-3 team within 10 months. It took him one spring camp, a summer and one fall camp to whip his team into winners. Taylor did it this quick because he has always been a winner. I say hire a winner and more times than not winners will attract good talent.

i agree 100% aggiejazz! sure, its a plus if our next coach has ties to north carolina that would help recruiting, but that can't be the overriding criteria for hiring our next coach.
broadway went from north carolina to louisiana and was very successful right off the bat with primarily existing players and local/regional recruits, just like taylor was.
frazier inherited a program at prairie view that was far worse off than ours and he used primarily texas recruits. they had just recently broken an 80 game losing streak (which makes our 27 game streak seem minor) and followed that with back to back "1 win" seasons. frazier won 3 games his first year which was 3 times as many as prairie view had won the previous 2 seasons (i think he'd take our 3 wins and turn it into 5 or 6 wins next year). he won 5 games in his second year at prairie view, 7 in his third, and 9 this year. i don't think too many aggies would complain if our program followed a similar progression.
while other coaches may see rebuilding our program as a daunting task, frazier would simply yawn at the challenge because he's rebuilt 2 programs both of which were far worse off than ours. to me, frazier is a no brainer and i'd pick him over broadway. but i wouldn't be disappointed if broadway got the job. i like slater also, but webster doesn't move me very much at all. his overall record is unimpressive...
she's the "symbol" of lady aggie basketball excellence. its amber calvin's "show time" in aggieland!! the queen of "no look" passes...
North Carolina A&T: Athletic director Wheer Brown has just released several assistant at NC A&T. Assistants Kenneth Ray, John McKenzie, Tayrone Odems, Mack Vincent, Chris Robinson, and Myron Jackson will not return. Interim head coach George Ragsdale and defensive backs coach Travis Oliver will continue to recruit until a new head football coach is hired. Sources tell FootballScoop that NC A&T is targeting several candidates including Southern Miss assistant coach Frank Wilson and Miami Hurricanes assistant Tommy Robinson.
Oleschool, Frazier is pretty dang good candidate, too. I think Wheeler has some good candidates to choose from his list.
I betcha if we saw the list of available candidates Dee Todd had three years ago we would be scratching our heads wondering "how in the 'heyal' did Todd screw up with a list of so many good candidates to pick?"

I don't think it's totally necessary that our new coach has close recruiting ties within this state when he arrives at A&T but I do believe he should develop them within this first 3-4 years. Nor do I believe Webster and Broadway are the ideal pick for A&T. Frazier developed his Texas recruiting ties after he got there and Taylor has done well in Florida.
For those that think a new coach must have recruiting ties to the area, why do you think Rags and Oliver are still around?
There’s one thing nobody is paying attention to when they name these names of people they’d like to see hired. That one thing is the fact that most of them are at schools that also would like to keep them. I don’t think it would be wise to get in a bidding war for a guy before he’s coached his first game here or even so much as spoken to the team no matter what he brings to the table. There are plenty of people in lower-division schools that have track records of success and are only looking for an opportunity to move up (and not looking to break the bank in the process). Actually I don’t think it would be wise to get into a bidding war at all that goes over six figures because frankly the job isn’t worth that much, but then I ain’t the A.D. and I ain’t fin to tell him how to do his job.

A good HC surrounds himself with sound fundamental asst coaches. Then go find the talent preferably a great many from NC, put together a sound O&D, and then move on to special plays and stunts that can win special games. Defeat the teams you are suppose to, defeat more than 1/2 of the teams you ARE even with, and upset at least one of the teams that are better than you. Find someone like that and we can all be happy. But remember ,PATIENCE is a virtue!!!!

gator,
I agree I had hoped we would name a Coach before the students go home for Christmas. I think this will lessen transfers if we annouce someone before the student athletes leave. As it stands now you go home for a month and have no idea who will be conducting spring practice. Other schools wil begin to feelers out there.
