Head Coach Kenny Phillips enters his ninth season at Fayetteville State University. The Broncos won three of its final four contests last season, despite the rocky start. The late surge nearly elevated the Broncos into the 2007 CIAA championship game. Thus far in his career with the Broncos, Phillips has posted a 48-38 record. Coach Phillips won the first CIAA Football Championship in Fayetteville State school history in 2002, and repeated the feat in 2003. Under Phillips tutelage, the Broncos has made three consecutive CIAA Championship Game appearances, appeared in two NCAA Regional Playoff contests, and has had several student-athletes received all-conference honors.
A 1985 graduate of East Carolina University, Phillips' coaching career began with the Pirates. He held the position of a student assistant coach, working with the outside linebackers, until entering the graduate program at his alma mater. While earning his Master's Degree in Education Administration, Phillips remained on the football staff as a graduate assistant and became responsible for the defensive ends.
He has collected several coaching honors and awards. In 2002, he was named the CIAA Coach of the Year, Most Outstanding Coach for the 2002 Championship Game, and the Washington D.C. Pigskin Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2003.
Coach Phillips took over the football program at Fayetteville State University in 2000. During the adjustment season, the Broncos finished 3-7 overall. In 2001, FSU improved with three more victories for a 6-4 overall record.
The 2002 season was one of many feats for Coach Phillips. His advancing squad finished as the best in the CIAA with an undefeated record. FSU, the CIAA Western Division Champion, defeated Bowie State in the CIAA Championship game 17-14. The Broncos advanced to the second round of playoffs and succumbed 40-27 to Carson-Newman. Phillips and his squad finished with an overall record of 10-2. Fayetteville State was ranked fifth in the SBN Poll and third in the NCAA South Region.
Fayetteville State walked away from the 2003 season with another CIAA Title after defeating Virginia Union 23-19 in the championship game. The Broncos represented the conference at the Pioneer Bowl but lost to Albany State 52-30. FSU finished 8-4 overall. Phillips was once again honored the Pigskin Club Coach of the Year.
The 2004 squad reigned again as the CIAA Western Division Champions but lost to the revamped football at Shaw University 10-7 in the championship game. The Broncos made its second NCAA Playoff appearence in three years against Carson-Newman. Despite the 35-14 loss, FSU finished the season with an 8-4 overall record.
Phillip has coached at numerous collegiate programs and brings battle-tested coaching experience to the defensive side of the ball. He has served as an assistant coach at Catawba College (Defensive line/Strength and Conditioning, 1987), North Carolina A & T University (Defensive line/linebackers, 1988-95), Ohio University (Defensive Special Teams Coordinator, 1995-97) and North Carolina State University (Defensive Tackles, 1997-2000). During his tenure at North Carolina A & T, the Aggies won back-to-back MEAC Championships (1991 & 1992) and he coached in the first Heritage Bowl. In 1998, NC State participated in the Wolfpacks first appearence in the Micron Bowl against the University of Miami.
As a student-athlete, Phillips earned two letters as an outside linebacker at Chowan Junior College and as a linebacker at East Carolina University. Phillips is married to the former Beverly Ellison of Beaufort, NC and they have two daughters, Kendra and Kennedy.
