The reason for the secrecy is to protect the candidates. Just like in the real world, not all candidates who apply for the job is unemployed. There is a chance that some will apply without the knowledge of their current employer.
Plus, you have to look at it from the Athletic Department point of view. What happens if they hire a dud and some of the other candidate turn out to be studs. If you want an example of this all you have to do is look back when UNC Chapel Hill hired John Bunting.
Paul Johnson, current head coach at Georgia Tech, and Pete Carroll at USC both have came out and said that UNC would not even answer their phone calls!

There is a chance that some will apply without the knowledge of their current employer. TO LATE!!!!! That is pure BS. HBCUs and other schools do it to prevent the venting and criticism of their candidates. The HBCUs also use secrecy to hide their hapless fumbling over their so-called national search for a candidate. It would be pure justice if everyone would start laughing once the phrase "national search" is utter at a firing press conference. There is an etiquette to ask for permission from the coach's AD prior to interviewing the coach, anyway. It doesn't mean it is always followed but it is followed a lot more times than not. And more times than not a coach isn't hurt for interviewing for another job if the coach is doing a good job with his current team. I don't think Maynor is hurt with WSSU and neither will Broadway get hurt. Every now and then you get a "Joe Taylor vs the Volcano (Hampton's president)" who stupidly tells the coach to take a hike. The Boston College situation was different, he was warned and signed a contract to that effect.

Even on the off chance all that is true (and it's not, because you generally have to ask permission to talk to a coach due to contractual obligations) it does not explain why there has been no updating whatsoever. We haven't even heard an announcement that Coach Lee was fired. I talked to one of my boys the other day and he didn't have a clue we didn't have a coach or an AD. Great communication there. We haven't heard that anybody was interviewing any candidates, whether they were named or not. You can't excuse that and you shouldn't. We give money to the school. I'm willing to bet you would be hard-pressed to find one poster on this site that doesn't. That makes us shareholders. What profitable company keeps is shareholders in the dark to this level? We are Enron. Enron C A&T. It's not about "being in the loop." It's about having basic respect for people who give their hard-earned money to support your haphazardly run mess of a program, and the kids who play for it.

Its because they are struggling with this hire. Doug Williams was the first person they offered the job too, he reminded them that we are now in the basement as far as Salary and Benefits goes for head Coaches in the MEAC since Central broke Frazier off real proper, we can't afford him! Now You have to know that RB knows this too, If you don't have money you have to hope the LOVE is stronger!!!!! Sooooo! unless we can antiup for RB, who loves us more Maynor or Ragsdale?

Went to the basketball game Saturday with three of my boys. None of them knew we didn't have a football coach. Two of them are (well, were) heavy donors. They were quite surprised.
You don't treat paying customers this way.
