Pros: Current successful Head Coach, Proven OC at college level, HBCU experience, staff can come with him, We can afford him
Cons: Can he recruit NC, history of changing jobs every 2-3 years,
He would win almost immediately at A&T but may not be a long-term solution. A must interview candidate.

I remember his offenses at JSU used to always light us up. Granted he did have a stud quarterback in Robert Kent back then. He won't have that if he comes here next year.

Asberry's approach to coaching football is very similar to Greg Jackson's approach to basketball.

I think if we hire Asberry, he will probably bring this guy along with him: Rich McGeorge Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line McGeorge brings over 20 years of collegiate and professional football coaching experience to the SU program. He comes to SU after a two year stint at NCCU as Offensive Line Coach. In his first season with the Eagles, the front line provided protection for the top-rated quarterback in the CIAA and paved the way for an 1,100 yard rusher. He also produced NCAA Division II All-American Ricardo Phillips. Prior to NCCU, he served a third stint as a Duke University assistant coach, serving as the running game coordinator and offensive line coach during the 2002-03 seasons. McGeorge got his start in coaching at Duke, coaching tight ends during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. He then spent two years on the staff of the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions before serving as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Bandits under Head Coach Steve Spurrier in 1985. He returned to Duke with Spurrier to coach the offensive line for three seasons (1987-89) as the Blue Devils captured the 1989 ACC Championship. He then spent three seasons as the offensive line coach at Florida (1990-92), helping the Gators to an SEC Championship (1991) and two bowl game appearances (1991 Sugar & 1992 Gator). McGeorge returned to the professional ranks in 1993 to begin a seven year stint with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, coaching tight ends and offensive line from 1993-99. During his tenure in Miami, the Dolphins won one AFC Eastern Division title (1994) and made five trips to the playoffs. After coaching stops with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League and the Green Bay Packers in 2000, he spent 2001 as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator of the Memphis franchise of the XFL, helping the Maniax lead the league in total offense. A native of Roanoke, VA, McGeorge was a two-time first team All-America pick at Elon College in 1968 and 1969. He was a first round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 1970 and played nine seasons with them (1970-78), totaling 175 career pass receptions for 2,370 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was the Packers’ 1973 Offensive Player of the Year, and was inducted into the Elon University (1979) and NAIA (1980) Hall of Fame. McGeorge earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education from Elon in 1971. He is married to the former Bonnie Moore and they are the proud parents of two sons, Randy and Jason.

Hell, we need McGeorge on our next staff regardless of who is head coach. That man has some serious credentials.

I would love to have McGeorge coaching our line...thats where we REALLY need the help. Plus Asberry is a proven offensive mind. I think we would do well to bring this team on board.

Shaw Bears are 2008 CIAA Champions!
Back 2 Back Win First in School History
Raleigh, NC - (November 8, 2008) The Shaw University Bears (8-3, 6-1) are the 2008 CIAA Champions after destroying the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University 36-7. In a week of phenomenal history, the Bears have made their own by winning the championship title back to back; a first in school history. Darrell Asberry, Head Coach of the Bears tagged the theme "Make History or Be History!" to his team at the onset of the 2008 season. The challenge has been answered; the Bears have MADE HISTORY!
Sending a personal statement to the Vikings, the Bears came out and manhandled their opponent with a defensive thrashing by the nation's number one ranked Division II defense holding the Vikings to 238 total offense yards. Following a series of missed scoring opportunities for both teams, the Bears put up the first score of the game with a 22 yard field goal by Caleb Reid with 2:48 in the first quarter and went ahead 3-0. Tyrone Bolden barreled in for the first touchdown of the game with a 24 yard pass from Travis Robinson. After the PAT by Reid, the Bears broadened their lead to 10-0.
With 14:02 on the clock in the second quarter, Dexter Manley ran in the first touchdown for the Vikings with a 28 yard pass from Curtis Rich. Andrew Hening added the extra point and the Vikings were on the board 10-7. Following the 56 yard field goal last week against JCSU, Lincoln Shepherd continued his outstanding performance with a 43 yard field goal sending the Bears further ahead 13-7 at the half.
The third quarter got underway and Lenell King wasted no time snatching the ball out of the air with one hand and scored on a 48 yard pass from Robinson. Reid's attempted PAT was blocked but the Bears bridge continued to stretch 19-7. Reid continued to mount stats with a successful 27 yard field goal with 6:29 left in the quarter; 22-7 for the Bears. Aaron Ellison scored on a two yard run and Reid kicked the extra point and the Bears went up 29-7.
The championship title was fifteen minutes away. With the clock ticking, James Petway drove in the last touchdown of the game on a 21 yard pass from Robinson and Reid finished the play with the extra point. VICTORY. The Bears claimed the second straight crown with a final score of 36-7. After six catches in the game, King totaled 87 yards and one touchdown; the longest at 48 yards. Robinson threw three touchdown passes for 209 yards with the longest at 48 yards. Raymond Williams rushed for 96 yards and Ellison rushed for 90; a dynamic performance by the duo. Playing with drive and determination on the field and continuously motivating his team on the sideline, Williams received the 2008 CIAA MVP Award for the Bears.
The Bears defense proved why they are the force to be reckoned with. In his best performance of the season, John Smith led with 8 tackles (5 solo and 3 assisted) and 1.5 sacks. LaMichael Howell made seven tackles (5 solo and 2 assisted). Gerard Jones made six tackles (3 solo and three assisted) and one key interception. Jon Huddleston had six tackles (three solo and three assisted); Liddon Levine had six tackles (1 solo and 5 assisted); Monte Coleman had five tackles (3 solo and 2 assisted); and Dwayne Moss had five tackles (2 solo and three assisted). The defense totaled 33 solo tackles, 42 assisted with four sacks, stopping the advance of the Tigers offense. Following the win Asberry stated, "This is our house and we defended our title; we have nothing left to prove. We are the 2008 CIAA Champions!" He dedicated the championship trophy to Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, President and Attorney Willie E. Gary, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw University. Newsome stated, "We won like champions. We are the champions!"
The Shaw Family congratulates the Bears for an incredible season and the successful back to back championship title!

One thing about it, if Asberry comes here and we start winning we will definitely get our swagger back. That is one cocky S.O.B.
I still remember when he got stole in the eye by Doug Williams because he ignored Doug's request and walked through Grambling's players entrance. Doug said he asked him nicely but Asberry paid him no mind.
I think the two of them are actually good friends these days ...

Can't that be said about any young coach ... or any young professional in any industry for that matter?

Yes changing jobs every 2-3 has been my pattern. However people on this board seem to want a coach that plans on staying 8 - 10 years. Like I said earlier I would interview him. He definitely more affordable than Webster or Broadway. I believe he is a better coach than Webster.
OK Thrilla, bring on the next candidate.(Monroe, Broadway, Webster, Frazier)

i'm not thrilled about ashberry but i agree he deserves an interview. i'm just not impressed with the level of football played in the ciaa. i don't think it takes a guru to be successful in that league...

Shoot the MEAC is only a half step ahead...if that! no way, treese! either you haven't been to a ciaa game lately or you're a poor judge of quality football. i recently had a first hand ground level sideline look at ciaa football and its basically glorified high school ball. and need i remind you that our pathetic aggies beat jcsu 44-12! we haven't even come "remotely" close to scoring 40 points ever since! hail, we haven't even scored 30 points, much less 40. and we've only scored 20 or more points a whopping 3 times out of the last 10 games! and you think the meac is a half step better than the ciaa? you think scsu is a half step better than shaw university? hail, other than howard and us, every team in the meac would completely smash shaw! and you think the meac is a half step better than the ciaa? c'mon dude, get real...
