You are right Groove, that is a joke! I saw all those players play that he mention, and "Bird" is definitely in the top 5. Bird is also the only player from A&T to be selected to try out for the Olympic team (Dean Smith picked him). To me, the best pure basketball player that I saw at A&T was "June" Harris (PG).

Best Players I have seen play from 1965 to present ... Teddy Campbell, George Mack, Carl Hubbard, Allen Spruill, James Outlaw, Elmer Alston, Lonnie Klutz, June Harris, Sparrow, Daryl Cherry and many more. James Sparrow is not even in the top 20. (I was wondering when this thread was going to pick up again!) Pound-for-pound, June Harris was the best I have ever seen...and I have seen all of those that you named. James "Doc" Anderson and Al Carter may have had the most heart. Still, all of the old timers that I talk to say that AL ATTLES was the best Aggie ever. (Click on the attachment link below.) I watched Al Attles play when he played in the NBA with the Philadelphia Warriors, before the team moved to San Francisco. Al was damn good. In San Francisco Al eventally became the head coach and later the general manager. I believe he is currently the president, if I am not mistaken. Bottom line is that there have been a lot of very good players that have come through Aggieland.

A&T for sooooooooooo long WAS a basketball factory!! There have been soooooooooo many STARS that have played for "T' through the years. It is really hard to rank them in order. I will say two of the BEST teams that we have had were in the '60's with Al Attles, Jerry Powell (ex NBA assistant coach-product of Boys High School in Brooklyn who was high school teammate with THE Connie Hawkins), Hugh Evans (20+ years as a NBA referee), Maurice McHartley(played all games with a toothpick in his mouth) and the team with Daryl Cherry(best all around athlete to come to "T"-all CIAA in football and basketball and cuda have been all CIAA in baseball if he wuda played) Teddy Campbell, Carl Hubbard, Lonnie Klutz (drafted by da Chicago Bulls), Hail that teams BENCH couda played our current team and they wuda STOMPED dem. Those were different times, how well I know. I remember "Bird" (James Sparrow) one of the most explosive players to ever play at "T". I was in NYC for the NIT when A&T played with him as their star. Hail tough, tough, choice but I gots to go with Al Attles. Al put "T" on the basketball map,. Al was A&T's FIRST NBA playa. Al as a point guard helped feed Wilt Chamberlin when he broke the record and scored 100 points in ONE NBA game. Al later was coach and GM with the Warriors and won a World Championship when they landed in San Francisco. I know the history that's WHY I gety so pissed with a CERTAIN men's basketball coach who CONSISTENTLY labors around .500 in the MEAC.

man, those were the days when we were "kings" of meac men's basketball! we use to "own" the meac. i really miss those days...

I wouldn't call Harris or Spruill a pure shooter. Outlaw could shoot better than both of them but not as good as Steve Rush. |

Best all Around A&T BB player ever? No doubt in my mind - James Sparrow. I remember covering A&T basketball day and night while free lancing for the AP at the same time in the 70's as a student and sports editor of ther Register so I got to travel with the team on every game.
As many great ones that have worn the blue and gold, he is by far most exciting player I've seen walk on the court for A&T. This guy was was a human highlight flim every time he touched the ball. What he could do with a basketball defies description.
I can remember 150-200 people just showing up sitting around the edge of the court in summer school after class was out just to see him play a simple shirt and skins pickup game behind Hayes Taylor YMCA about every afternoon and on the weekends.
Talk about brigning a "A" game? That's all he ever had.

Man...that's a sight for sore eyes! He does look good.
I played against him when I was at SC State and I practiced with him when I transferred to A&T. He was a good one...but I still think that June Harris was the best that I saw in an Aggie uniform (even though I was in elementary school and junior high school when he played).

June Harris was a gamer but who was the guy that played the other guide with him. I remember him getting injured on a Dunk but I can't think of his name. Dude could Sky.
