"Soapy" played during a time when HBCU's were getting some of the best black talent in the country so compared to a lot of players in the CIAA and on his own team he would have been considered average. His name should be mention because of the fact that he was good enough for us to be talking about him now. There are some aggies who would consider him one of the greats.

Soapy Adams was from Brooklyn, NY and a graduate of Eastern District High School-Brooklyn. He was an excellent shooting guard/small foward. Soapy was my classmate at A&T. He was the Aggie star on the greatest CIAA Tournment Basketball game ever played in 1968 between A&T and Norfolk State. A&T lost to Norfolk State in three (3) overtimes 138-136 in the Greensboro. On that Norfolk State team was Bobby Dandridge, Pee Wee Kirkland and Hook Shoot Grant.

I have worked in the NBA since 1988, and that is STILL the greatest game that I have ever seen. My best friend is currently the team president for an NBA team and he was the other ballboy that night, and he says that is still the greatest game that he has ever seen, too. I didn't realize that Soapy was that big... ...picturing him as a small point guard only. Was he bigger than Earl Monroe??

Soapy was 6' 3" tall with long arms and big hands. He had a high rainbow type jump shot that stayed in the air forever before going through the bottom of the nets. Never seen any thing like it before!!!!!!

All-American forward Elmer Austin (6-4) would be on my starting five of the greatest A&T All-Star team. he could play the 1-3 spots and was just the most consistent player I've ever seen in an A&T uniform. the guy would bring you 20 and ten every single game.

'69-72 E. Austin was a Moses Malone type player, not in stature, but in work ethic. He would out work you all game long. This is an example of the A&T of old. Three Aggies on the All-MEAC First Team 1972 Elmer Austin, First Team James Outlaw, First Team William “June” Harris, First Team 1976 Sinclair Colbert, First Team Ron Johnson, First Team James Sparrow, First Team 1984 Joe Binion, First Team Eric Boyd, First Team Jimmy Brown, First Team 1987 Claude Williams, First Team George Cale, First Team Thomas Griffis, First Team

I remember Elmer Austin, too. I probably didn't appreciate him because, using my viewpoint as a young grade school kid, he didn't seem flashy like Soapy Adams and later June Harris and Al Carter. I remember my parents raving at the way he played the game, though. Wasn't he a Greensboro native??

:)The greatest basketball playa in A&T history is without a doubt Al Attles. Al was All-CIAA, played for the NBA Warriors with Wilt Chamberlin, coached in the NBA, and won a NBA Championship as a GM w/Golden State Warriors. His pedigre speaks 4 itself. Other Aggies need 2 do their research. Sparrow was super nice and was one of the greatest offense playas in the history of Aggie BB but Al Attles was a trailblazer and his resume' stands by itself. Oh yeah, A&T has mostly had its fame as a basketball school.

:)Oh yeah, A&T has mostly had its fame as a basketball school. I think in all honesty, A&T has had their highest greatest claim to fame in basketball so I don't quite understand all of fuss about football. A&T has never dominated over multiple years in football like they have in basketball. Why isn't Sparrow in A&T and MEAC Sports Hall of Fame? Sparrow still holds several MEAC Tournament records.

Bird was a good ball player but far from being the best at A&T. I have seen players from the 60's to the present and I know what I have seen. Have you ever heard of ... Al Attles, George Mack, Soapy Adams, Teddy Campbell, Jim Brown Jr., Allen Spruill, James Outlaw, June Harris, Jimmy Staggs, Joe Binion, Claude Williams, Bob Booker, Nate Pettus, Butch Walker and a few more. These guys were super bad and could beat any team that A&T has produced in the 15 years.

Forgot about Elmer Austin. He was a very good inside player who could rebound and make garbage baskets at will. He is from Greensboro. Does anyone remember 'Big G' ... Gilmer. He was great at center. Carl Hubbard was a very good defender and held Earl Monroe to his lowest scoring night in the GSO Coliseum in the CIAA Tournament. We won that game and we were the only team to beat Winston Salem that year. We won the CIAA Championship also. I remember the best college game to ever be played in the history of basketball ... A&T - Norfolk State ... 3 OVER TIMES. We lost by 2 points ... 134 - 136. Al Carter was not bad. He could shoot his a$$ off.
