Have you ever heard of Jimmy Staggs. Staggs was a bad player back in the late 60's. He left A&T after about 2 years here on Coach Cal Irvin's team and went straight to the ABA and played for the Florida Floridians. He had game and Bird could not touch him with a 10 ft pole.

Man, I completely forgot about Staggs from Philly. You are rite.....he left A&T and went straight into the pros (ABA). For those that don't know the ABA was started as a competitor league to the NBA and had great playas in it. The great Julius "Dr. J" Erving, the great Charlie Scott (first back playa @unc), the great Artis Gilmore, and many more played in the ABA. Some of the ABA eventually merged with the NBA. Old ABA teams were: New Jersey, San Antonio, Denver...just to name a few. Staggs definitely had more talent than Sparrow but he left early. Not beating Bird down beacuse he was the best of his era but not the bestest ;D

^^^ I vaguely remember Staggs (I certainly remember the name)...know that he was a very good player for Coach Irvin, but I don't know any specifics.
I know the athletics director from that era very, very well, and will ask him about Staggs.

Staggs and Booker played on the 67-68 team that lost to Norkolk St. in that triple overtime CIAA championship game. They may have come back for 68-69 also can't remember for sure.

Best college BB game ever played bar none. No lie!!! Me and my best friend (who is now the Bobcats' team president) were 5th grade ball boys for that game. Both of us have worked in the NBA for a long time now, and it is still the greatest game that we have ever seen.

Of course I remember Bob Booker. He and Staggs were two bad Brothers. I recently saw Booker in Philly when we lost Pedro. His knees are bad now but other than that he is doing fine.
When A&T lost to Norfolk State and Bobby Dandridge in 3 O T's that was and still is considered the best college basketball game ever played. We lost but we had a heck of a team. Coach Irvin had sooooo many great players on that team. Remember "Big G"? He and Teddy Campbell were monsters on the boards. George Mack also from Philly was a tremendous player along with Carl Hubbard and the late great Daryl Cherry. Elmer Austin also was on this team and he was from Greensboro's Dudley High. They called him "Flute" and he could get those offensive rebounds like no one else.
Bird may be in the top 25 for all time Greats at A&T but clearly not in the top 10.
This particular team had at least 7 or 8 players alone better than Sparrow. Man, Sparrow was good but to me he had trouble handling the ball under pressure. He would not have even started on this team and that is a fact. Coach Irvin could recruit his butt off.

Coaches Cal Irvin, Big House Gaines and Don Corbett recruited up north the majority of the time. I don't know why Eaves never took the hint. Maybe he would still be around if he had.
On a personal note former great Aggie player Teddy Campbell told me a true story of how he came to A&T from Philly. He said he was recruited by "Big House" at Winston Salem and was on his way there on the train to enroll at Winston. He said the train made a brief stop in Greensboro and he looked up from his seat and saw this Black man walking towards him. It was Coach Cal Irvin approaching him. He said Coach Irvin persuaded him in 3 minutes or less to come to A&T. He said he did not know how Coach Irvin knew he was on that train. He said "I never made it to Winston to play for Big House".
The rest is history. Ted Campbell was the all time leading rebounder for A&T for years - plus he could score. He played briefly in the NBA with the 76ers and in the ABA as well. He passed in 2008.
