Everyone keeps saying we dont have enough money to buy Fobbs out. While this may be true I got an idea. Alright, here it goes:
Dump Fobbs, Try to get him to resign with a small buyout or something first. If he doesn't take that then just dump him. If there isn't a buy out clause in his contract then with a 4 year deal we would owe him about 330K. 330K is a big chunk of cheese for the program to just blow, but what you do is put the "real" OC/Oline coach in charge for 2008-2009 as an Interim Coach. Give him a small increase and call it a day. I know it can be done because Livingstone did it for a full 2 years with Robert Massey.
Why give it to the current OC/O-line Coach you say? Because anything is better than Fobbs and it will show people that we are at least willing to make a change and not settle for this dibacle. I also think he has a strong assistant/recruiter in Frenchers to help out and some other coaches would probably leave so you could replace them at a slightly lower rate(Saves about 15K). You now have a Hungry staff looking to prove themselves.
A lot of people will have to swallow a lot of pride to pull this off. First person that has to eat humble pie is Ree-Todd. She has to admit that hiring Fobbs was a mistake and was HER mistake, but is willing to do ANYTHING to correct it. Second person would be the current OC. He would have to be willing to do head coach duties on OC salary. That's not far fetched if the guy loves what he does. He wont get this opportunity any where else. Thats saving about 90K right there. But we would need to hire another Assistant. OK, then 45K for another assistant. That still leaves the university about down 240K (330K[foobs buyout] - 90K[money saved from interim coach]). Let a few of the coaches back in the classroom if they are qualified to do so. That may knockoff another 50K or so. Take off the 15K from the new assistant coaches and we are now down to about 175K now. I think the university can afford 175K to get rid of Fobbs and make everyone happy. 3rd and definitely not least would be the Aggie Faithful. Be on board, support this decision, and GIVE GIVE GIVE to show your support that firing Fobbs was the right thing to do.
Some of this may SEEM far fetched, but is it really? This should be looked at like a business decision. It makes sense. It's a real "penny pinching" way of doing it, but we already penny pinching and will pay a bigger price if he stays. We would only have to do this for 2 years and then its back to business as usual. Whats the worse that can happen, we actually win some games next year? If they ball out and win big next season we would just raise the current Interim title to HC and be done. If not he would try again in 2009 and we would have a clean slate after that.
So to sum it all up: 2 year Interim Coach = 175-190K in the hole instead of keeping Fobbs. If the season turns out great then hire the guy full time and we probably didn't loss any money at all.
Wheeew that was long. Who likes it?
