WASHINGTON - After spending two years with North Carolina A&T State University, Tennille Adams was named American University women's basketball assistant coach, Head Coach Melissa McFerrin announced Tuesday.
While working as an assistant coach with the Aggies, Adams was responsible for recruiting, scouting opponents, individual work-outs, film breakdown and on-court coaching during practices and games. Focusing on the importance of coaching student athletes, Adams supervised the academic progress of the squad, while building and maintaining relationships with the student-athletes, faculty and administration. With experience in motivational speaking, the University of Arkansas graduate used this on and off the court to motivate and help with the development of the athletes.
Working in conjunction with the head coach, Adams set budgetary limits for various aspects of the program, monitored the status of each sector of the women's basketball budget, while coordinating all aspects of team travel.
"We are very excited to bring a coach with Tennille's talents and experiences to American," said McFerrin. "As an assistant coach at North Carolina A&T, she brings Division I level recruiting experience. She understands the recruiting process and will be able to attract academically and athletically gifted players to American University. She is committed to our goal of becoming "the Pride of the Patriot League" and she is anxious to make her mark as an Eagle."
Prior to joining the staff at North Carolina A&T State University, Adams worked as the assistant women's basketball coach at Lon Morris Junior College.
Before heading into coaching, Adams excelled as a student athlete at the University of Arkansas. While playing basketball as a Lady Razorback, Adams was a member of the 1997-1998 Final Four Team and the 1998-99 WNIT Championship Team. On an individual level, Adams was ranked in the top five post players in the nation and as one of the top 50 seniors by Blue Star.
"As a player with Final Four experience while at the University of Arkansas, we expect her to assist with the mental, physical and skill development of our post players," said McFerrin.
Adams graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelors of Art as an English major.
