Chargers are the picture of successMVP WARE HAS 70 POINTS, 30 BOARDS IN TOURNEY By Mike Fields HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER Jeffersontown's basketball season had a picture-perfect ending last night with the Chargers winning the 89th Sweet Sixteen championship and cutting down the nets in Rupp Arena. Led by the stellar play of Ceedrick Ware and Thomas Coleman, J-town beat surprise finalist Apollo 61-48 in front of a crowd of 16,263. "What an incredible, incredible blessing," J-town Coach Jeff Morrow said as confetti sprinkled down on him and his celebrating players. "I told these guys, it's a memory to last a lifetime." A memory that will last longer than any photograph. Last year, Morrow taped a small black-and-white picture of Rupp Arena in his players' lockers to remind them of their ultimate destination. But even though the Chargers had Mr. Basketball Domonic Tilford, they didn't make it to Lexington. Before this season began, Ware asked his coach to put another picture of Rupp Arena in their lockers. "He wanted this one to be bigger, and in color," said Morrow, who complied with his star player's wishes. After picturing themselves in Rupp Arena all season, J-town's players got their photos taken celebrating their dream-come-true. "It's a lot better really being here," said Ware, who was named Sweet Sixteen MVP after totaling 70 points and 30 rebounds in J-town's wins over Johnson Central, Shelby County, Graves County and Apollo. It was a long week for the Chargers, who played their regional championship Monday night. But winning five games in six days didn't bother them a bit. "We wouldn't let ourselves get tired," Ware said. J-town (32-3) was simply too strong and athletic for Apollo (25-11), which didn't have the size or overall quickness to slow the Chargers. J-town led wire-to-wire. It enjoyed leads of nine in the first quarter and 15 in the second quarter. Apollo rallied both times, and trailed 24-15 at halftime. The Chargers rebuilt a 12-point lead in the third quarter, but Apollo closed the gap to 36-31.
That's when Coleman went to work inside. The 6-foot-8 junior had 12 points in the last quarter. He finished the night with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
"They had no answer to Thomas," Morrow said. "Once we decided to get the ball in there to him, it pretty much decided the game."Ware had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Rashad Basey added 10 points as J-town closed the season with an 18-game winning streak. Apollo, which upset Covington Catholic, Mason County and Pleasure Ridge Park to get to the finals, got a huge game from Tyler Brown. The 6-1 sophomore had 22 points and seven rebounds. Doug Denton added 10 points. The Eagles, who shot only 19 percent in the first half but still only trailed by nine, couldn't match J-town's rebounding strength. "Neither team shot well, but (J-town) just went and got their missed shots," Apollo Coach Tony Hopper said. The Chargers had a 40-20 advantage on the boards. "We've got a lot to be proud of," Hopper said. "Only a month ago we weren't even on the radar. I would have liked for us to play a little better on this stage, but sports is not always fair." For J-town's players, winning the state championship was something they thought they could do last year. But then all they had to look at was a little black-and-white photo of Rupp Arena. This season they had a big, color picture that helped them imagine what it would be like. Now that he's celebrated a state title in Rupp, will Ware take down the picture in his locker? "No, I'm leaving it up there for next year's players," he said. www.realcities.com/mld/kentucky/sports/high_school/14137520.htm

February 13, 2006 Kentucky big man has three in hot pursuit
Brian Snow Musketeerscoop.com
Earlier this season Thomas Coleman, a junior big man, made the trip north from Kentucky to Cincinnati to view a Xavier basketball game. Coleman is one of the fastest rising big men in the state of Kentucky, and is beginning to hear from several schools. Coleman's coach, Jeff Morrow, updated Musketeerscoop.com on Coleman's progress this season, and which schools are recruiting him.

Eaves stole one with this dude! Something must have happened his senior year for us to get him because he was listed as a major D-I prospect his junior year. Preseason he was rated as the #8 best player in the state of Kentucky! To make this even sweeter the kid has grown from 6-7 to 6-9 in the last 2 years and may not be finished growing.

More news....... Jeffersontown's Thomas Coleman and Ballard's Twany Beckham will be two of the top recruits from the city of Louisville next season.
The 6-foot-8 Coleman helped Jeffersonown to the state title last season and said Bradley has made an offer but said he will wait a while. Coleman said he's also looking at Xavier and has recently received multiple letters from Kentucky.www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/2006_07_01_archive.html

UPDATED: 2:49 PM Coleman signs with NC A&T By Jody Demling jdemling@courier-journal.com The Courier-Journal
One Jeffersontown High School basketball star has made his college choice, while a former Charger is still trying to decide on another school.
Thomas Coleman signed a national letter-of-intent today with North Carolina A&T, while former Mr. Basketball Domonic Tilford is trying to pick between UNC Charlotte, St. Bonaventure and South Alabama.
The 6-foot-9 Coleman, who helped J’town to the state championship as a junior, averaged 13.2 points and 10.6 rebounds as a senior. He was named to The Courier-Journal’s second-team All-State team.
He picked the Aggies over Morehead State, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, Coppin State and Georgetown and will play for former University of Louisville player and assistant coach Jerry Eaves at N.C. A&T.
“It just came down to that I didn’t want to wait on anybody else,” said Coleman, who was still in discussions with Miami of Ohio. “(Eaves) had been recruiting me since the middle of the season and when I went to visit campus I liked it. It was a nice campus and town and a place where I could see myself at.”
Coleman is a member of the Kentucky All-Star team.

Ya-hoo! This is Coach Eaves' most herald recruit in his tenure at A&T and a must needed recruit just in time in my opinion. With the influx of above average big men coming into the MEAC the Aggies really needed a big man who can rebound, defend and score on the inside.
I really like his rebounding stats. In the state championship game last year he grab 10 rebounds plus scored 20 points. Against weaker opponents this year he was grabbing 15 to 17 rebounds. I really like A&T's front line next year with Jason Wills and incoming Ed Jones on the wings and Thomas Coleman at center. Rush and Ewing will be starting at guards giving A&T your classic inside/outside game going strong into next season.

Wow! Kentucky, Georgetown, Xavier? This kid is no stiff.
I'm glad Eaves went big this year getting three real big men, giving us a strong inside offensive prescence in the paint to go with shooters like Rush and Ewing. I think we may have finally gotten over hump. This team is now shaping up as a really solid contender with quality depth for next year.

He's also starting at center in the KY-INDY High School All Star Games next month in Indianapolis and Lexington next month. www.ncataggies.com/Mensbasketball/2006-07%20articles/aggiesvrecruits2.htmEaves adds more height to current recruiting class
GREENSBORO, May 8, 2007 – North Carolina A&T men’s basketball coach Jerry Eaves signed the third member of his 2007 recruiting class when he inked 6-foot-9, 220-pound center/power forward Thomas Coleman out of Louisville, Ky., to a national letter of intent. “Thomas will truly make us a very good team on the boards and offensively with his body and ability,’’ said Eaves. “He gives us a presence on the boards and makes us a better defensive team.” Coleman attended Jeffersontown High School. He helped Jeffersontown to the state championship as a junior and averaged 13.2 points and 10.6 rebounds a senior. He was a second-team All-State selection by The Courier-Journal. “It just came down to that I didn’t want to wait on anybody else,’’ Coleman told the Journal. “Coach Eaves had been recruiting me since the middle of the season and when I went to visit the campus I liked it. It was a nice campus and a city, and it was a place where I could see myself being.” Coleman’s other suitors included Coppin State, Georgetown and Morehead State. Coleman is a member of the Kentucky All-Star team. Coleman joins Ed Jones (Leesburg, Va.) and Kam Shepherd (Orlando, Fla.) as members of Eaves’ 2007 recruiting class. Each player is 6-foot-7 or taller. They make for a nice young nucleus to go along with a team that will likely feature seven seniors.

It looks like some of the big boys dropped off because his numbers didn't quite live up to preseason expectations. I think a lot of the majors were expecting something closer to 20 pts and 12 rbs per game. Of course that can be difficult if you have a guard on your team that takes a lot of shots. With the three point line moving back and the style Eaves likes to play he should do very well here.

I wonder how much of his own money Eaves had to pony up to recruit this kid? Maybe we can fork over a little more money to help in that arena.
It's exciting that he's coming. I hope this is what Eaves needs to turn the corner, especially with Morgan and Hampton recruiting so well.

I don't buy that. The only reason he decided to come to A&t was because someone showed him that youtube video, and he knows it.
