I see Webster at 6-10 and Porter at 6-9 barely played this season. Is there any hope that either one can develop into a halfway decent contributor? Has either one been redshirted?

I don't know the answer to any of your questions. I just feel at some point you know whether a player will ever be a major contributor. There are tough decisions that have to be made when your're rebuilding a program. We have to continue to upgrade our talent level when we have the opportunity to do so.

i am not a college coach, but i have coached at the aau level...at some point you have to make a decision about a kid; play him and let the chips fall or write him off....it is not an easy thing to do to take away someone's scholarship, but when you cant guarantee a 4 year ride, these type of decisions must be made...it's just like cutting a kid who just cant make it....it's hard, but it's part of the business and goes with the territory....

I am sure that coach will do the right thing for the program and the kids. There is a reason why its called an athletic scholarship....

4XL, is there a possibility one may transfer to a D-2 program? That way we will have another scholarship available and the kid can get some playing time at a lower level.

Scholarship yanking because a player doesn't pan out is unheard of. Do that and see future recruits RUN away when A&T approaches. That's not an option.

Scholarship non-renewals happen at most schools annually. It is explain to the student-athletes when they sign their Letter of Intent, that scholarships are only one year deals at the schools pleasure to renew. Every athlete that announces he tranferring isn't leaving only for play time sometimes it because he knows his scholarship is in danger. The good programs help these athletes find other school to attend or other ways to pay for college.

The men BB coaches at "T" didn't do it but check out the women's BB program or football program at "T". Coach Bill Hayes would do it every year. The following BB coaches did it, Bobby Knight, Dean Smith and Coack K at Duke. Knight and Coach K would ask the player or players to leave. Coach Dean Smith didn't necessarily yank scholarships. He let two stiffs from my way stay on as scholarship players. Dean Smith would keep a scholarship or two to pass out to walkons. Coach Smith will give a walkon a scholarship for a year but it was not guranteed for the next year. I happen to sit with the UNC parents at a game a few years ago and all of the parents for the walkon players were talking about how they hope their son will get a scholarship for next year. The parents had mentioned that Dean Smith had told them that he would let each walkon know at the end of the season whether or not he will receive that scholarship. I am not for yanking scholarships if the student-athlete is doing the best that he or she can in the sport and in the classroom. Webster was out all season due to injury.

I have never seen Webster play, but there is hope that Porter will be a contributor. But is he willing to work on his game himself. He has decent footwork, good mobility, a soft touch, respectable hands and good size. The question is, is he willing to increase his agility, develop a low post move (jump hoop w/ either hand), shoot a couple hundred free throws and jumpers a day and pump some iron? Which is what it would take to be "Player" and take it up a couple move levels.

I never said "yanking" doesn't happen. I'm saying it's not good business to do so. Most of the time it is said when the scholarship is given if they are on the bubble or not. if it was understood that they would be on the bubble then that's fine, but if they were promised a full ride and they just found someone better than you after you got there, then that's different. Start doing that and the word will get out. Yanking for not coming to practice or being lazy is fine with me, but yanking because we made the wrong decision is crazy. That's all I'm saying.

From what I saw their first year Webster is a better player than Porter. Is Webster from Orlando Fla. ?

Ask your self this question. If an athletic scholarship is awarded on the basis of athletic ability, why can't I take it if there is a lack thereof?
