MEAC ANNOUNCES COMMISSIONER’S ALL-ACADEMIC HONOREES
Over 500 Student-Athletes recognized for 3.0 or above GPAs
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 13, 2006) -- Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Commissioner Dr. Dennis E. Thomas announced today the 2006 Commissioner’s All-Academic Award winners from MEAC member institutions.
The Commissioner recognizes student-athletes, sophomores to seniors, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better from January to December (or Spring to Fall semesters).
“I am elated to announce and see an increase in our student-athletes that have a grade point average of 3.0 or better” stated Commissioner Thomas. “
He also stated “this is indicative of the student-athletes’ commitment to procure their degrees but also the institutions efforts to ensure that the academic support systems are in place to assist the student-athlete ameliorate their academic performance and secure their degree.”
There were 523 student-athletes honored this year. Howard University led all MEAC institutions with 82 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s All-Academic list. Hampton University was second with 68 total and Delaware State rounded out the top three with 60.
Overall, 296 women received All-Academic honors, compared to 227 men. Florida A&M was the lone institution to have a higher number of men (than women) on the All-Academic list. Coppin State had an even number of men and women.

Over 500 Student-Athletes recognized for 3.0 or above GPAs
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 13, 2006) -- Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Commissioner Dr. Dennis E. Thomas announced today the 2006 Commissioner’s All-Academic Award winners from MEAC member institutions.
The Commissioner recognizes student-athletes, sophomores to seniors, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better from January to December (or Spring to Fall semesters).
“I am elated to announce and see an increase in our student-athletes that have a grade point average of 3.0 or better” stated Commissioner Thomas. “
He also stated “this is indicative of the student-athletes’ commitment to procure their degrees but also the institutions efforts to ensure that the academic support systems are in place to assist the student-athlete ameliorate their academic performance and secure their degree.”
There were 523 student-athletes honored this year. Howard University led all MEAC institutions with 82 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s All-Academic list. Hampton University was second with 68 total and Delaware State rounded out the top three with 60.
Overall, 296 women received All-Academic honors, compared to 227 men. Florida A&M was the lone institution to have a higher number of men (than women) on the All-Academic list. Coppin State had an even number of men and women.
