I wasn't suggesting DSU could beat Winthrop, at least not with Jackson the helm. My point was that DSU should have performed at the same level as Winthrop. They had one of the most talented teams in MEAC history and underacheived.

why wouldn't the coaches along with the commmissioner & school presidents make a commitment to make the meac the missouri valley east or the acc hbcu style..... let's build up our own neighborhood.... the meac could be just as good!!!

Yes, DSU under achieved since they did not win the MEAC tournament for the second year in a row or get any significant out of conference wins ( beat only Buffalo and Southern U) lost to 7 teams (Pitt-NC St-Mo State- Wisc-Purdue- marq) that are in a post season tournament also lost to Sam Houston State...too much talent to not get a break through win....or to get beat at home by Morgan ( 20 points)

I'm glad Jackson is not coaching here. Some of you would have ridden him out of town on a rail. I repeat, give me 3 championship game appearances(in the last four years), 1 NCAA appearance and 2 NIT appearances and I will take that any day.

4XL, your standards just might be lower than some people on this board.

4XL, your standards just might be lower than some people on this board. If 3 championship game appearance in four years is lowered expectations, I'll take it any day of the week.... Especially for a school that was the conference dormat for decades. (DSU).

Dude is making 230k a year and has one of the higher recruiting budgets of any HBCU coach. Maybe some fans are just ready to see him take his team to the next level.
Being the best of the MEAC is not something I would want on my tombstone.

At what point should a coach be expected to do more than just reach the champtionship game in the worst conference in the division one basketball. It's not like he doesn't have the resources in place to accomplish more. How many 1-AA football coaches do you know that make 230k a year?
Why do we always have to been content with mediocrity? Could that be a reason why HBCU athletics never seem able to get to the next level? Why does being a MEAC coach mean you can't ever win on a national level?

I was listening to Jim Rome today. He had John Calipari, coach of Memphis on. A few points about what he said were interestingly close to what BT is talking about.
- All of the games played before the NCAA tournament in his mind are played to get the best seeding he can in March. Win streaks, conference championships are all a part of being seeded better each year to give his team a better chance in the Big Dance.
- People talk about his conference(Conference USA) being weak. He doesn't care. He just wants to win games to get the best seeding possible in the NCAAs.
- When asked about recruiting to a "weak" conference he said "We play on TV often enough and we only recruit winners. For example, all of our recruits for 2007-08 are from state championship game teams. We recruit guys that expect to win when they step on the court."
His attitude was it doesn't matter about the conference, what matters is the kids he recruits to Memphis. They are in the Sweet 16. BTW, they are 31-3, 16-0.

Wonder how much he spent on recruiting??? He got three to five players out of NC (Laurinburg and Mt. Zion) and a pretty good crop out TN.

Jackson has done a decent job and I definitely wouldn't get rid of a coach that can win conference championships but I also wouldn't celebrate or reward underacheivement. He had a starting five as good as the top mid majors and a few major D-I programs so quite naturally the expectation level was raised. He blew a golden opportunity!
