Fellas, I am a huge Eaves fan when it comes to X's and O's. I have maintained that his offensive sets are wonderful... Everyone moves.. Backdoor cuts, V cuts, etc... No one stands around and watches or waits for the ball and everyone knows their spot. That said, we have a prolific scorer and to my knowledge he still doesn't start. For most of the season I've been trying to convince myself that its impossible to start a 5'11 shoot-first guard (that thinks a "pass" is something you get in order to roam the halls at your local middle school) because it poses problems with running the offense and it can create a mismatch situation on defense. However, seeing our offense stagnate with our STARTERS in the game calls for desperate measures.
First off, I don't know if many people notice, but Rush is one our most athletic players. He can dunk vertically with ease, he gets tremendous elevation on his jumpshot, and he plays tough defense against the MEAC's slightly-taller 2 guards. Its almost like our starting lineup is TOO unselfish. Could you ever imagine Glenn Nelson or Angelo Hernandez breaking out and having a 20 point game? The answer is a resounding NO. Most games, we don't even get going until Rush gets in the game, so imagine what could happen if he were in the game at the beginning of both halves to start things off. I am an Eaves fan, but I disagree with running from mismatches as opposed to dictating the mismatches. Rush vs. the average two-guard is a mismatch in our favor in my opinion, so I think its time to start him and relegate Hernandez to the bench.... and Nelson may as well take a seat beside him and let Ewing start. Yes, we will have two 6 foot guards in the game at once, but thats usually who finishes the game anyway... but lately, by then its been too late.
My starting five:
Ewing Rush Booth Roberts Wills
Who yall got?

I'm not sure Ewing and Rush are 5'10". If you put a big guard on Rush who has decent speed, he has a problem getting off his shot. That is how Morgan beat us in Baltimore.

I don't have a problem with starting Ewing and Rush (I believe he did early in the season), but neither is 6', more like 5' 10". Hernandez is one of his better defenders and passers. Nelson had a pretty good game against Coppin. Rush and Ewing are streak shooters. They have to get off early or they tend to struggle with their shots. Now as for Booth? ? Eaves probably needs to start as many of his so called "big people" in the front court as he can. Rebounding is a problem for the team. Most of the teams I've seen at Corbett seem to have their Xs and Os down too. I would think that it is a matter of execution.

"who would run point" Good question, since Ewing, Nelson and Alston are points and Rush is a 2 guard. However, we don't know if Hernandez has ever played point. As I have pointed out before, Eaves has recruited four players between 6' 8" and 6' 10" and none have been talented. Chad Webster is around 6' 10" and is in that group, but is out for the season with a foot injury.

I would either have Hernandez bring the ball up or start Ewing
Booth cannot start at all

The answer is no one... Hernandez has done it in spots before with mixed results, but it definitely could not be Rush. He is a Redick/Reggie Miller type player that is most effective coming off screens and launching. He can't be expected to run point. I don't think Nelson or Hernandez are garbage, but I think having them both out there at the same time contributes mightily to our scoring droughts. Although there are some exceptions, in most games they rarely pose a threat to the defense. If you've got two guys on the court that are hardly threats to score, you can easily collapse on Wills and double team Rush or other shooters off screens. Ewing and Rush ALWAYS pose a threat to score. Ewing is also more of a threat to get to the basket than Nelson.

When we first saw Nelson play, he was driving to the basket as well as shooting jumpers. That mostly stopped until the game against Coppin when he became more aggressive and drove to the basket on 3, 4 or more occassions. Maybe someone on this board can explain the sudden change in his play. Because for awhile he seemed to be tentative about taking shots.

It wouldn't make one difference even if we had Dewayne Wade and Kobe Bryant in the backcourt.
Until we find some real inside presence, that is three 6-7 or 6-8 wide bodies who are rebounders and defensive stoppers first, we'll remain a perimeter team that lives and dies with the three and trying to outrun people in transition.
We are respectable but we simply have too many defensive liabilities in the paint because of our lack size and physicality to challenge for a league title.

Aggie One, our size is comparable to everyone in the league except Del State. The teams we have been losing to lately have had the same sized front court that we've had.
