From Norfolk State University
Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers is the new president of Norfolk State University.
Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers is the fifth president of Norfolk State University.
The Newport News native was selected after a nationwide search to find a replacement for Marie McDemmond, who stepped down last summer because of an illness.
Meyers comes to Norfolk State from North Carolina A&T State University, where she was provost and vice chancellor.
During a news conference Friday, Meyers vowed to take the university "to the next level."
She did not offer specific plans for the university, but said she would strive "to provide our students with what they deserve: simply, the best education possible."
Meyers is scheduled to take over in July.
The presidential search committee "strongly felt that Dr. Meyers' background in science and technology was the right fit to position Norfolk State as a major player in the areas of scientific research," Jack Ezzell, NSU's rector, said in a statement.
Ezell said that, among other things, Meyers' ties to the Hampton Roads region and appreciation of the tradition of historically black colleges and universities "put her over the top."
Meyers holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Howard University, as well as master's and doctoral degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has done post-doctoral work at Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management, and her career in higher education spans more than 30 years.
Joseph H. Silver Sr., vice president for academic affairs at Savannah State University in Georgia, also interviewed for the presidency. A third final candidate, Kofi Lomotey, former president of Fort Valley State University in Georgia, withdrew from consideration.
