I was just curious about what all yall's musical tastes encompass. Since it seems like we cover music/artists in here on a fairly regular basis. I've heard Toni Braxton, Coldplay and a few others mentioned in here. So what else yall got??

Check out Sergio Mendes or Milton Nacimiento - both Brazilians - for good listening. Some of it is batucada, some bossa nova, and some just a good mix of several styles. Also Youssou N'dour (Moroccan) is on purnt, no lie. Well, if you're into world music or interested in stretching your borders - I would suggest any of these.....

To be honest with you, I've been thoroughly disappointed with today's music so I started making compilation CD's with the music that I want to hear from the days when hip-hop was hip-hop and when R&B was R&B. My personal collection that I didn't burn includes everybody from Stevie Wonder to Miles Davis to Mint Condition. I use them to get me through the hot days in Mississippi.
The newest thing I have in my collection is hip hop by a group called Little Brother (from N.C.). Their new album is called the Minstrel Show and it drops on Sept. 13. I have an advance copy and if you love hip hop....this will be the CD of the year for you to get.

I've been contemplating buying the Nirvana box set for a while now. I actually think some of the most original and refreshing music right now is coming out of the white music community via "alternative" rock (Which is a sad testament on the state of black music) I still remember when Nirvana first came out and even then I liked their sound. I might have to follow 90 Aggie's lead and pick up that Nirvana.....How is that new Me'shell by the way?? I heard it was okay.
p.s.-I thought Musiq's last CD was excellent.

That En Vogue sounds like it would be pretty good. I have a few best of's.....Chaka Khan, Sade. Good stuff. Ibrahim Ferrer, the Buena Vista Social Club are in here. Everything OutKast has ever put out....just about the same can be said as far as what Celia Cruz has done. She's here too....The best of Rossini - got that too.
I actually had a chance to hear the new CD from Hootie & the Blowfish. They did a free live concert up here a few weeks ago where they played a lot of stuff off the new album. It honestly sounded pretty good and I'm pretty sure it hits stores today. They put on a good performance too.....started mixin' and rappin' and splicing other genres. All live. All instrumental. Interesting to hear B.I.G.'s "Big Pappa" and Snoop's "Gin & Juice" redone with a lil Lo' Country flava......
Freeze, I can agree that the stuff that gets spun constantly on MTV, BET, VH1, CMT, and (some) radio stations, leaves a whole lot to be desired. Usually void of substance of any sort - lyrically, musically, etc. But hey, if it sounds good in the first few licks, I'll listen....

How is that new Me'shell by the way?? I heard it was okay. p.s.-I thought Musiq's last CD was excellent. I thought Musiq's last CD (Soulstar) was straight garbage. I only picked up Juslisen to add to my collection and because "Half Crazy" and "Don't Change" are the best songs on it. Surprisingly enough, while listening to Juslisen yesterday, "I got it." It's pretty good to me now. I'll have to give Soulstar one more chance. Me'Shell is on a whole 'nother level with her latest. This is strictly a jazz-type disc, she does no singing, but does have guest vocalists. IMO, it's sort of a mix between "real" jazz and "smooth" jazz. I like it. It's good background music and would probably be really good to play while "getting my groove on." ;D Anybody got Maroon 5? I had it in my hands but put it back. I still might go get it, though. Anybody into reggae?

I have the Minstrel Show. Straight dope. Period. Also grab the 9th Wonder and Buckshot (Boot Camp Clik) album.
Scion (the car company) has put out volumes of CDs for the undergound heads. I'm still trying to collect them all.
I am on a Madlib and Pete Rock binge right now. See stonesthrow.com for info on one of the most innovative hip-hop producers of today...Madlib.
I have redicovered Pete Rock, thanks to producer 9th Wonder, who is the probably the best in a line of Pete disciples (Kev Brown, Kanye West, Chops, J. Sands, Oddisee).
If anybody remembers the Lyricist Lounge, I just got the CD from the lead actor (and original performer) Wordsworth.
As far as R&B goes...I, for some reason, actually LIKE Bobby Valentino. His second single, "Tell Me," is a club banger. But the remix for "Slow Down" (only on CD) is a baby-maker.

Ball 1 you lost me with that Bobby V. (but I haven't heard the whole album so I cant say much about it). But The Minstrel Show hopefully will change the game in hip hop. I was talking to Pat (Ninth) and he told me that writers from XXL and the Source confided to them that they think its better than Common's latest effort BE, which I believe it is as well. Whatcha know about that Percy Miracle ;D

90A, Maroon 5 is pretty good. I can't say there's a song on there that I don't like. They're all good. And definitely into reggae here....salsa, merengue, reggaeton, bachata too.

Alright, I think I might pick that up this weekend. Any reggae recommendations to add to my collection?
I like the traditional style - Marley, Tosh, Burning Spear, Gregory Issacs
Hate Dancehall with a passion but will buy some Yellowman.
Tell me what's hot!
