AGGIES EARN CORBETT SPORTS CENTER WIN NO. 200
The win also marked the Aggies first two-game winning streak in three years
GREENSBORO, N.C., January 17, 2005 – Many outstanding N.C. A&T men’s basketball players have graced Corbett Sports Center since the opening of the facility in 1978.
Men such as Joe Binion, Claude Williams, Eric Boyd, Glenn Taggart and Phillip Allen and head coach Don Corbett all played a part in compiling wins inside Corbett.
However, on Monday, January 17 (Martin Luther King Jr., Day), it was men such as Steven Koger, Sean Booker, Rechodd Carter and head coach Jerry Eaves who collected the 200th win inside of Corbett.
Koger scored 22 points, one shy of his career high, and Sean Booker added 15 points to lead the Aggies to a an 82-72 win over the Bison.
The win marked the Aggies first two-game winning streak since Feb. 11 (N.C. Central) and Feb. 16 (Maryland-Eastern Shore) of 2002.
Will Gant had 15 points and Darryl Hudson added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Howard in the loss.
“It’s all about learning how to win,’’ Eaves said. “It’s a process, but when it all starts coming together special things start to happen like tonight. If we’re patient and stay on the path we’re going, we’re going to be really, really good in four or five years.”
N.C. A&T built an early 15-point first-half lead only to see the Bison go on a 19-4 run over the next seven minutes to tie the game at 27 with 4:14 to play in the half.
The Bison eventually took the lead at 32-31 at the 2:18 mark, but the Aggies answered as Booker followed a Carter missed free throw with a layup, caught an alley-oop dunk from Carter and hit a 3-pointer during an 11-0 Aggies run to the end the half.
The Bison would get no closer than four points in the second half as a Will Blanden layup made it 49-45 with 12:45 remaining. Koger ended any hopes of a Bison rally as he scored eight points over the next 2 ½ minutes of the game to help the Aggies expand their lead to 61-48.
N.C. A&T matched its win total of last season with the win, improving to 3-13 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC. The Aggies salvaged a split of their four-game homestand, which lasted between Jan. 8-Jan. 17. Their average attendance during the homestand was 4,035.
“We feel like we let some games get away at home,’’ Eaves said. “We really feel like we should be at the top of the standings and not in the middle. But that’s all behind us now. We’ve got to start thinking about getting some road wins in this conference.”
The Aggies will take their annual tour through Florida, opening with Florida A&M on Saturday before facing Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 24.
The Aggies will try to earn win No. 201 inside of Corbett at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 when Maryland-Eastern Shore comes to Greensboro.
