Hayles Becomes The Nation's Top 400m Runner Hayles is ranked 10th in the world.

GAINSVILLE, Fla. – Going against some of the nation's best at the 2023 Pepsi Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida at Percy Beard Track brought out top performances for several North Carolina A&T outdoor track and field athletes on Saturday. The second day of the event saw Reheem Hayles step into rare air. Hayles ran the nation's top time in the 400 meters on Saturday when he won the event in 45.47. Hayles narrowly bested Judson Lincoln IV of Virginia Tech (45.66), the fourth-ranked 400m runner in the country, to claim victory. Hayles' time on Saturday is the 10th fastest in the world this year. "Reheem had another great showing," said A&T director of track and field Allen Johnson. "He continues to improve and is exciting to watch." Also taking advantage of the competition, senior Shemar Chambers secured a third-place finish in the 400m and rose to No. 5 in the country with a time of 45.73. Chambers ran the 15th-fastest time in the world this year. Both Hayles and Chambers recorded personal bests on Saturday, and their times should guarantee their bids to the NCAA East Division I Preliminary Round. It will be hard for him to keep that position this week since he is not likely to be pushed if he runs the 400 at our home meet and because last week a lot of the top 400 guys only ran legs on relays . From looking at the teams coming to A&T, I only saw one other D1 program

We will continue to lose athletes due to not having a NIL collective.

We will continue to lose athletes due to not having a NIL collective. That will not help. P5 schools will continue to poach our best athletes in every sport and athletes will continue to explore what they percieve as better opportunities.

Unfortunately that’s the way things are going to be for the foreseeable future. It is what it is…that said, I’d rather athletes perceive our program as a launching point than a dead end. We’ve seen a good number of kids leave for P5 schools.

P5 programs offer NIL, which is money in the athletes pocket. Hayles knows he can make the Olympics and win a national championship at A&T. What A&T cannot provide is NIL which provides spending money and reduces other life pressures.

Having the NIL won’t hurt but I also think any “stars” we develop will perceive running for a P5 top track school as an opportunity too good to pass up. There were a lot of former D2 and smaller D1 athletes running for P5 this year.

Let’s not forget Hayles has P5 offers prior to signing with A&T.
These are his accomplishments prior to signing with us.
Hayles is the No. 1 athlete in the country. As a senior he recorded four top-10 times nationally, including 1:18.48 in the 600 meters (No. 1), 47:64 in the 400 meters (No. 3), 1:03.81 in the 500 meters (No. 4) and 34.07 in the 300 meters (No. 6). He won all six major metro track and field events in New York in the 500 meters, including the NY state championships, PSAL city championships, the NY Millrose Games, the PSAL Queens Borough championships, the PSAL Martin Luther King Relays and the PSAL Jim McKay Games. Hayes finished the season undefeated in the 500 meters as a senior.

We will continue to lose athletes due to not having a NIL collective. That depends on the sport. Football, Basketball possibly . But track and field is not a NIL attractor for most programs that track athletes sign with . T&F is about being Pro focused. The majority of your top level NCAA competitors in track and field, you will find that there are very few that have NIL contracts (reason's you will see below in the link). So please stop using the NIL for T&F in the same conversation with FB & BB when it comes to recruitment of T&F athletes. www.runnersworld.com/news/a43412222/nil-college-runners/Also T&F is about exposure and performances. A&T has Coach Johnson, understands how the circuit works, along with his contacts Within the pro circuit. You run the right meets against the right competition and accomplish the right times on a consistent basis out of conference, conference, regionals and Nationals. That is what attracts quality track and field athletes. A&T already has accomplished those things now the problem is to keep those athletes at A&T . My take on the retention of athletes in track and field is this. It's nice to be on a national championship team . But it's even more gratifying to be part of a team that you helped build to be national champions.

Hayles. And Chambers failed to make the Jamaican national team in the 400 . They ran 45.82 and 46.06 . Paula Salmon ran a 13.22 to finish 7th and also failed to make the team
