Did you see Duncan Powell is back in the portal . Damn ! Again...I wish the kid the best, what is he thinking. Do these young people think this is really the best way to achieve their goals? I ask that question assuming their goal is to get a free education and a shot at playing at the next level. When you know the odds of making is as a pro, and even making another team once you enter the portal...is the price of admission (giving up your scholarship) even worth it? I just saw that kid that was at UNCW...transferred to NSU, became MEAC player of the year...is back in the portal again. He's a great player and UNCW and NSU are good schools with great programs...what is he looking for?

My son has found his love for the game again in the NAIA and will see out his final year of eligibility at Cumberlands. I have been surprised at the standard especially in the National Tournament games. He finished half a season averaging 9.6ppg , 6.1 rpg , 29 blocks on 20min pg. He said he is done sitting on the bench.

Did you notice that I did not say earn a degree from a particular type of school known for academics. What others want will vary. Some of these will backfire on players, but they gave it a try.

I'm glad Harry has found his passion for the game again .

I just saw that kid that was at UNCW...transferred to NSU, became MEAC player of the year...is back in the portal again. He's a great player and UNCW and NSU are good schools with great programs...what is he looking for? this behavior has "always" been a part of our culture, just that it never manifested itself at the college level until the transfer portal was introduced. trust me, those of us who have been associated with aau and high school basketball for a very long time know that kids have been jumping from aau team to aau team and from high school team to high school team for many "decades". this is "normal" behavior for them. so the idea of "transferring" multiple times from team to team has been very "common" in our culture. only reason we didn't see it at the college level is because under the "old rules", you had to sit out a year if you transferred laterally or to a higher level. so kids were not willing to sit years at a time just to transfer multiple times. but the portal changed all of that. now the college players are only doing what they have always been accustomed to doing at the aau and high school levels. in their eyes, its perfectly fine to transfer as many times as they'd like...

Did you notice that I did not say earn a degree from a particular type of school known for academics. Duncan will have no problems landing elsewhere with his stats. What others want will vary. Some of these portal entry will backfire on players, but they will say they atleast gave it a try. A friend of mine told me this week that the son of a relative placed his name in the transfer portal last week. The player was a freshman playing basketball at a D1 school who played in every game last season averaging 8 min/gm. The player told his dad that if he can't play quality minutes at another D1 basketball school he will quit basketball. He already has been contacted by multiple D2, so that is not a problem. These are kids, reacting like kids who think they know what they want out of life. Think about it. Most of these kids have been playing basketball for >12 years as the main attraction. They have a totally different perspective on basketball and school compared to those whom never walked in their shoes.

Powell and Watson were never meant to be in our space. These guys have the right to chase the bag but doing it EVERY YEAR is not a good fit for anybody.

How is it that he has any eligibility left? Most likely it's a medical waiver. He was injured and sat out last season.

though i'm glad that watson is no longer on our team because of his "ball hog" selfish style of play, that doesn't however change the fact that he's a very "gifted" athlete. if he was a "team player" (which he ain't), i'd luv to have him back on our team but that ain't happin' nor should it. i wish him well...
