Sources: Trent Dilfer set to take over UAB football teamFormer NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer is expected to become the next head football coach at UAB, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday night. Although a deal hasn't been formalized, the sides are expected to come to terms in the upcoming days, sources said. Dilfer, 50, the head coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, is a former standout quarterback at Fresno State, who graduated to an NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. He won the Super Bowl with the Ravens in the 2000 season. The Blazers finished 6-6 this season under interim coach Bryant Vincent, who is also the team's offensive coordinator. They were among three teams in Conference USA to finish 4-4 in the league. Vincent replaced Bill Clark, who resigned in June for health reasons. Under Clark, UAB went 49-26 across six seasons, including a 2-2 mark in bowls. In Clark's final season, the Blazers finished 9-4, including a victory in the Independence Bowl. Dilfer, a former ESPN analyst, was the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft by Tampa Bay in 1994. A 1997 Pro Bowler, Dilfer appeared in 130 games, throwing for 20,518 yards, 113 touchdowns and 129 interceptions. In his fourth season at Lipscomb, Dilfer has led the Mustangs to a 12-0 record this season. They will play Thursday in a state championship game in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Blazers were in good shape at 4-2 after a 34-20 win over Charlotte on Oct. 15. But they proceeded to lose three straight games, and had to rally with a 37-27 win over Louisiana Tech in the season finale last week to gain bowl eligibility. UAB scheduled up just once this season, playing one Power 5 team, LSU. They lost to the Tigers, 41-10, on Nov. 19. The Blazers will take on Miami (Ohio) (6-6) in the Hometown Lenders Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 16. www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/35143729/sources-trent-dilfer-set-take-uab-football-team

‘We’ll build this thing from the inside-out’: Trent Dilfer embracing life as UAB football head coach
Updated: Dec. 10, 2022, 5:30 a.m.|Published: Dec. 09, 2022, 2:05 p.m.
By Evan DudleyUAB football head coach Trent Dilfer has been on the job for a week and running errands and pulling grunt work for the current staff as preparations are underway for the Blazers’ fifth bowl game in the last six seasons. “I plan on serving Coach (Bryant) Vincent and the staff anyway I can, I mean that,” Dilfer said. “He’s the head coach. I’m here to support him in the transition and serve these young men and serve the staff. I’m not joking. If they sent me on coffee runs, I’ll go on coffee runs.” Aside from precisely explaining each order to the barista, Dilfer has been busy putting together his first coaching staff, recruiting the greater southeast and transfer portal, ahead of early signing day, and becoming more familiar with a program and city that is opening its arms to the former Super Bowl champion quarterback. However, UAB is not a complete unknown to the seventh head coach in program history. Dilfer played with multiple players in the NFL who had connections to the state of Alabama, including Saraland football coach Jeff Kelly, and led his Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.) prep program to a 24-14 win over Class 7A champion Thompson earlier this year. He’s also an admitted fan-boy of former head coach Bill Clark. “What was interesting was two weeks after my wife and I had that conversation, I’m saying ‘we’re staying’ and she’s saying ‘I have a sense you were made for more than this,” and in my head, ‘She’s right again, I can’t admit it, but she’s right again,’” Dilfer said. “It was intriguing and UAB is something I’ve been aware of. I’ve followed Coach (Bill) Clark. I had a friend that I helped out get a walk-on player here.” Read more: www.al.com/uab/2022/12/well-build-this-thing-from-the-inside-out-trent-dilfer-embracing-life-as-uab-football-head-coach.html

So Dilfer is coming from the high school ranks as well, I see. As far as us, I don't know what to expect for real. I would like to be optimistic but, realistically, I can't. Not to highjack the post but, when we roll around to Sept. '23...we will find ourselves getting beaten up by a high school coach who is in his first year as a head coach of a college football team. I'm watching "First Take" right now and they are talking about the Cowboys demonstrating the evidence that they can win in the playoffs. Well, the evidence is very slim much like it is for our football team.

You know UAB is an FBS school and the “high school coach” is a Super Bowl winning qb?

There is zero need to be so darn negative and myopic about this. It is what it is. This one game won't determine how successful we are in 2023. However, you're entitled to your opinions.

I would love to have reasons for optimism heading into the holidays about our football program. Are there any...? If so, name them...I'll wait. We know what we are facing in the CAA, is there something I'm missing...? Then, there's our coaching challenges, albeit I like our coaches from a personal standpoint but, we are not ready for next level football. We learned that in Boiling Springs didn't we...? It's not personal...never personal but, the eye test only tells us that we have tough days ahead. So, don't be bothered by the message of reality that we face.

It's not personal...never personal but, the eye test only tells us that we have tough days ahead. So, don't be bothered by the message of reality that we face. We’ll have one of the best Offensive lines and arguably the best RB in the CAA next year. We may also have one of the best CB duos and MLB next season. We only lose 14 seniors and have just 4 players in the transfer portal. Brickhandler could also be the best QB we had since Raynard. Lastly, Gardner Webb was a really good team. You can’t take that away from them. They’re likely going to be the lead dog in the Big South/OVC joint venture. You can’t take that away from them. We will have good bones going into our first CAA party. We won’t be 0-8 by any stretch. In fact, if we can get some good returns in the transfer portal at key spots along the DL, Secondary, and at WR, we could mess around and win 4 conference games.

Brickhandler could also be the best QB we had since Raynard. I love your optimism, but there is no sample size to support this. Brickhandler played 2 quarters against Duke and 1 series against SCSU.

Time will tell. However, thinking we're about to embark on another 0-27 streak is a bit of a stretch right now.

Big facts! Let's allow the young man to get his body right as he now understands that this is different ball than what he has experienced. There are other QBs on the roster and in the portal.

All this is great, but I thought this thread was about Sam Washington vs. Trent Dilfer.
I actually believe there's a small possibility of victory there if we keep it close and win the turnover battle. But I also believe a victory would be the worst thing that could happen to us because it would put us squarely in the crosshairs of every team we face after that. If Dilfer's team blows us out, we'll be overlooked. That would give us a better advantage in games after that.
In the words of Carl Thomas, it's a catch 22.
