The BGMM is definitely not loved outside of NC. Many band heads and kids don’t like A&T style that is a fact, a lot of talented NC players leave to go to more aggressive sounding heavy arrangement band like a Talledega. Believe it or not Cold Steel catches a lot of heat for their lack of playing/punches. This year is a down year for the band. Our brass lack numbers the woodwinds make us look big and as someone said earlier the lack of brass and talent affects our sound. You lose brass players to other schools that are giving schlorships. Kids will always take money 1st. Want an example, NCCU. When they were large they were giving schlorships. Once the money was cut the band numbers dropped

There’s plenty of scholarships outside of music. I turned down a $500 scholarship from Dr. Hodge but never paid a dime to go to school. Hillside consistently earns the most scholarship money of all the public schools in Durham. They have 30 people in their band because their feeder system is jacked up. As it is we always get 3 or 4 people from there. What if they were marching 150, making the same grades they’re making now, and in awe of the product we put out? Fix the middle schools and their relationship with the high schools and colleges and the problem is solved.
