You can't pin recruiting on one specific factor. It's a plethora of reasons why a band can have a down year. I hope the band well beef up some next season due to the fact they are going to Pasadena, CA. As far as recruiting, you can recruit an exceptional player and bring the rest of the section up to his/her level but, if all that shows up are average players and count in the fact that they are young then, this is what happens. It was much worse in Houston sitting next to Southern. Our band has improved throughout the season but, we need the resources to recruit very good talent. See...this type of day that would need to continue to happen in order for the administration seriously consider giving resources for scholarships. Then, on Saturdays no one wants to hear that Norfolk has scholarships and we don't. It's bs position to be in...my opinion. Norfolk is nothing new...Norfolk has always been a monster of a band. You had people that wanted to be in A&T's band that's why we could compete but, that's not the case without $$$$. That's the bottom line... I was with you until you said "this type of day would need to continue to happen for the administration seriously consider giving resources for scholarships." That's when I knew we would disagree. Our Administration (and specifically Chancellor Martin) could care less about us "losing " a band brawl.

No don’t misunderstand…it would have to be extreme. If we were living in the SWAC, it would be more evident. Over time losing wears on anybody.

I understand your point, but I don't think this Administration is concerned about which band out cranked us. Don't get me wrong, Norfolk State, Southern, Jackson State and Bethune Cookman are all nice schools with a talented band but unless they become an R1, significantly increase their academics and endowment, and their enrollment and become a major competitor to us for students and research funding, I don't think they are a concern of this Administration. In other words, Marching Band ranking is a non-event to this Administration! A few alumni may get bent out of shape, but that's it. If the BGMM was a big deal to this Administration, they would not have spent the past decade operating out of an old warehouse, practicing in a muddy poorly lite parking lot and only have $100,000 in band scholarships.

Listen, the band has been moved to the oversight of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs which includes the Student Center, Intramurals, the RecCenter, Student Activities, etc. Make note: NOT Music, NOT Arts and Sciences, NOT Athletics. I'm not sure if that helps the band or not.

You all continue to use scholarships as an excuse. No one is giving out money at the level that you all think. NSU is no different than other HBCU; they are giving out money at the level you think. Just like you all like their band, so do the kids in high school. Those bands you continue to name, students are on academic scholarships or also using partial or all financial aid. BCC students are on financial aid. Plenty of them that marched will tell you the dame.
T has a population of 11,000. A number of those students probably have a music background and possibly are on academic scholarships or financial aid. I said it before, a lot of students at T may just not like the current style. I attended the events that include both bands this weekend and past events. People outside of A&T do not like the style of the band. The proof are in the comments. Under the you tube videos.

Lack of scholarships are never an issue until the band does not perform well. The inconsistency falls on the band staff not scholarships or large numbers.

Nope, lack of scholarships comes up like clockwork around here. It started off during band camp this season. But I will say I agree with you - it’s an excuse. And there is no inconsistency. AAMU exposed us by doing more with just about the same the first performance of the season. Most people were just too busy looking at Southern to notice. Nobody’s talking about Kentucky State either, but that’s another case of why scholarships are a poor excuse.

I don’t think it’s our style is what’s keeping the numbers “down”. There was a time when pretty much everybody loved our style, and the band was smaller than it is now. The school was smaller too, so it’s pretty much the same. I keep pointing out we’re sharing the local recruits with a million other HBCUs, unlike just about every other good band out there. We’re doing next to no investing in feeder programs to increase the local talent pool and indoctrinate potential recruits. And when we get here we accept whatever walks through the door - very little effort to convert willing musicians to the instrumentation we want. Most of the other big name programs address all three of those points, and none of them area as unachievable as buying a large band. I don’t think anything is wrong with our style either. When we’re aggressive it works. We’re just way too passive most of the time.

Music selection....music selection.....music selection...... We got 22 tubas, the most I ever recall seeing. Our sound is good; our band is big.
NSU went BET on us and we act like the world is falling. Tighten up the music selection (especially when playing an HBCU) and all is forgotten.
We should have saved last week's halftime performance (which wasn't bad) for the game this weekend.

Southern is just as bad as A&T when it comes to scholarships, and look at them... Its a different band world down there. Same as football. Its just different. Heck....even the feeder school argument was valid in that regard......just look at what they bring out for parade season the closer we get to Mardi Gras
