Hilton said soccer is in our future. Any clue as to where a soccer field would go? - Truist Stadium - A field near the new $90 million wellness center - The new practice field next to Truist Westcoast...you are wrong on this one but half way right....( A field near the new $90 million wellness center)

Here's the facts for you all
1. Soccer and turf field will be next to new recreation center. 2. Baseball is in phase one of renovation waiting on design approval and meeting with City Officials about historic part 3. Baseball and softball hitting facility is in talks behind war memorial 4. Moore Gym isn't going to be volleyball specific 5. Looking to move softball field to War Memorial 6. Bowling Alley will be in New Recreation Center. 7. Athletics will acquire old recreation center for additional weight room and training room
Will Sod the game and practice field in late May or Early June

Kev, Most of your list seems to be connected to dollars that have already been allocated or identified. Do you have any insight into athletics projects that are not connected to either War Memorial or the Recreation Center monies?

I went to UNCW yesterday for a track visit(CAA school). ummmmm......A&T got a whole lot of work to do! UNCW could start football and be ahead of us in 2 years if they wanted to because everything else is top notch. They own way more wooded land than A&T, which makes things easier.
1) Their gym makes Corbet look like trash. I mean trash trash. Corbet just cant be configured properly with the way its support colums block views its not possible to look as nice as some of these gyms. UNCW gym is a remodeled gym though, so I see how Corbet could come close to that and be OK. They coudl get rid of the bleachers and go all seats and do some other small things and it would look nice, but forget that. Just do a whole new facility. 2) No chain link fences. No where. Every thing has brick post and black fencing. It makes a huge difference asthetically 3) Their student athletic center is the best I've been in. Its literally the size of 2, yes 2 Lifetime Fitness. They have a 150 meter mondo track around 4 full basketball courts. raquet ball rooms, yoga rooms. Treadmills, free weights and machines for as far as the eye can see. 2 swimming pools and 2 other basketball courts on the other side of the building. Its fully staffed at all time like a Lifetime Fitness 4) They have a intramural fields area that is awesome. 2 soccer fields side by side. Field turf with sand and coconut(not rubber). Yes, I said coconut. That could become their football stadium JUST LIKE THAT. Its already beautifully fenced in. The intramural and soccer field are right next to each other so they can just throw a football field up with no problem and still have room for a practice field. 5) They have 12 tennis courts 6) They have a covered softball practice area. A covered baseball outdoor area AND a indoor batting facility for baseball
I could go on, but to make the biggest jump on catching them we first need to get turf fields(PLURAL) and just get rid of the grass. Its time. Next would be to get rid of the chain link. Asthetically those 2 things are major.
2nd, just demolish either Corbett or Moore or both and build something new. Tear them both down and rent the Greensboro Coliseum for a year while we get a multipurpose facility for home games, practice and other things.
And 3rd, A multipurpose indoor facility where track can host indoor meets and other sports can use for small practices/workouts.

Will Sod the game and practice field in late May or Early June Hopefully we will thoughtfully get the best grade of grass turf for athletic fields installed and not just send a truck over to Lowe's. Unfortunately, I'm still not convinced we know how to take care of it properly.

Your whole post makes me sad. Incredibly sad Maxell. Are the reason(s) as obvious as most of us think?

Your whole post makes me sad. Incredibly sad Maxell. Are the reason(s) as obvious as most of us think? 1 major difference is that they don’t have football. If we didn’t field a football team that ~ $4M a year could be used on facilities. 2, they have 18K students vs our 13500…they bring in more money off student fees.

Tear them both down and rent the Greensboro Coliseum for a year while we get a multipurpose facility for home games, practice and other things. And 3rd, A multipurpose indoor facility where track can host indoor meets and other sports can use for small practices/workouts. Growing up in Wilmington it's amazing how much UNCW has grown since I was a child. I recall back when I was a student at how much better their faculties were when I would take summer classes at UNCW and transfer the credits back to A&T. The classes were filled with students from A&T and NC State taking math and science courses. Man I took chemistry, two levels of physics, and several electives during the summer at UNCW. It was a breeze compared to A&T. In fact the hardest course I had at UNCW was Great British Writers . I remember going to a friends dorm room to study and was DAMN...after all I was living in Scott. The school, like UNCC is very new...so everything looks nice, and like one poster already stated they very much care about the details. I graduated from high school in their basketball arena, so I'd like to see the upgrades myself. They are not known a a sports juggernaut, but they've had some good years across various sports. It's the only thing in the region unless you cross the boarder to catch a game at Coastal Carolina, but honestly that's even a "recent" thing for a local and old timer like me. I can't speak to what people think about the school now, but when I was growing up UNCW was an after thought. You went to school there if you couldn't afford to leave town and head up I-40 (Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro)...or Hwy 74/76 (Charlotte) for school. It's known as a "good" school, but like I said very "regional". Locals had no affiliation to the other schools in the CAA so like many in area it was all ACC all the time. I'm sure they were glad to see another NC based school join the conference. They have around 20K students now right? It would be good for the area if they started a football program...there have been rumblings over the years, especially when the city was proposing a river front stadium for the local soccer team...think they are the Sharks as I recall. Folks wanted UNCW to start a football program and rent the stadium instead of building one on campus. That was many years ago however, and with the layout of the CAA at the time, no football history, and little local fan and alumni interest the desire went away. I wouldn't be surprised if people started pushing for it again. We have to up out facilities game for sure...are they on another planet compared to us...no, but what they have is new and well maintained. They care about the details and that is an area where we as Aggies have fallen short for a number of reasons. Things like turf on the football and practice field...our baseball\softball facilities, tennis courts, and the type of fencing we have are areas where schools like UNCW and CAA schools in general seem to excel. This move will force the issue as the differences are very apparent...hell, we have in many ways fallen behind many other HBCUs in that area.

The difference may be that they value the QUALITY of the athletics facility more. Which ONE of our facilities/amenities would you consider "top notch"? (I'm having problems answering this myself) I'm even more sad because I can't think of one immediately. Maybe the Corbett scoreboard and locker rooms. For example, we have an opportunity to make #TheWar a quality ballpark, but I'm even concerned that the War Memorial Stadium renovation will end up looking "new but cheap" because we will try to stretch the money to do too much.

I agree, hopefully they will make The War a top notch facility and the future softball stadium too.

IMO our facilities are "other side of the tracks" high school level almost all the way across the board. I've seen very few pwcs no matter the level with facilities as downtrodden. I'd say the press box is up there, but it's attached to a stadium you have to have attended Ayantee to love and it's also entirely too narrow for the length of the stadium. If we're doing any renovations we have to keep in mind our facilities are bottom rung in the first place. We're starting a whole city block behind everybody we hope to compete against. The best bet would be to make piecemeal top quality upgrades that can accommodate further upgrades as we get the finances to do so. IMO one of the five facilities we need is a medical school. I know, it's not technically a "facility" but the triad has a large enough population to support a state medical school and there are so many hospitals in Greensboro alone it's ridiculous we don't have one. Another "facility" is a gymnastics team. Corbett might be unusable as a decent basketball arena but volleyball and gymnastics would be nice. No hbcu has a gymnastics team. Fisk is getting one in a couple of years and they have tons of girls contacting them already trying to be a part and an olympic champion as head coach. Any hbcu that gets a gymnastics team is going to immediately be a force if done properly. Honestly I'd love to see us gobble up every bit of the office park across 29 and make it parking, dorms, and athletics. Call it "east campus" or something. If we were the only state school in the city that would've happened ages ago. You all know what I mean.
