GREENSBORO -- Whatever the videotape shows about N.C. A&T's defense from its game against Wake Forest, coach George Small will never watch most of it.
"After the first couple of series, I threw the tape away," Small said Monday. "The fundamentals went right out the window, just like the tape did."
The Aggies' defense surrendered 405 yards, including 336 on the ground, in the 42-3 thrashing. Small said he wasn't too upset with the offense, which showed some positive signs in the second half. But the defense was another matter.
Small, who also coaches the defensive line, felt A&T's defenders forgot almost everything they had been taught to this point.
"Defensively, we threw away our weapons," he said. "I'm a stickler on techniques and fundamentals.
"None of our defensive players made any honors this week. I can't think of too many things they did well in that game. When it comes to sudden change (after a turnover), you've got to go out defensively and play football, and I don't think we did that."
Wake Forest scored on one play after A&T fumbled on its own 13-yard line and on two plays after an interception put the ball on the Aggies' 10.
A&T's defense ranked third among Division I-AA teams last season, giving up an average of 268.1 yards per game. This season's unit has eight new starters.
"Our expectations are for them to come right in and pick up where those guys left off," Small said. "Is that realistic? No. Is it demanding? Yes, it's very demanding.
"Defense wins championship games, and if we can't stop someone, we're in trouble. We were expecting them to stand up and play a little bit better than they did fundamentally."
GLENN UPDATE: Small said starting quarterback Marshall Glenn will be treated for his dislocated left (non-throwing) shoulder this week. Glenn's progress will be monitored and his status for Saturday's game against Elon is listed as questionable.
Adrian Moye, a fifth-year senior who completed nine of 18 passes against Wake Forest, will get most of the repetitions in practice, at least in the early part of the week. Ivan Larrymore, a transfer from Virginia Tech, will be the backup until Glenn is ready.
"He's the last one," Small said of Larrymore. "That's it."
